Death by CEL

I started with emery cloth then polished using a dremel with a polishing wheel and jewelers rouge I had on hand. Stay away from steel wool it leaves bits to rust all over. Chore Boy from the grocery store would have been my first choice, its a brass copper alloy but I had none. I had to flip the Cap O ring over because I didnt even notice the filler neck till it chewed up the new caps O ring a little. There is also a vent tube to the right of the filler neck which is leaking smoke after the cap and polish job but im replacing vac lines with silicone and will look for a cure for that leak while ordering parts. Truck runs like new so im not too concerned by P0441. I tested the VSV AKA Purge control selnoid and need a new one $89 denso OEM. I flushed it with brake cleaner and got it to work but will order a new one this one is 17 years old as are my vac lines. Should take care of P0446.

I cleaned out the filler neck and got the rust removed. Added some petroleum jelly around the gas cap. Cleared the light. So far, no light.

I do have a question. When you guys remove your gas cap, do you get that whooshing sound of the pressure relief?

 

YES! its a good thing. Gasoline vapors are being trapped preventing hydrocarbon pollution. This is the EVAP systems purpose. The hiss or whoosh will vary with ambient temperature.
