I'm trying to change out the oil in the front diff. I got fill plug off first pretty easily, but the drain won't budge. I tried a breaker bar and an extension on my ratchet handle but it's not going to go anywhere. Fearing that I might strip out the head and/or snapping the 10mm allen bit, I gave up. I'm not sure if the front diff oil has ever been changed, I just did the rest of the gearboxes and the rear diff without any issues and the oil didn't look bad at all.

Since I'm rarely in 4wd, do you think it would be safe to leave it? My truck has 98k on it.

Smack the head of the plug with a ballpine hammer a few times. Then give it a try.

As long as the socket is clean and you've got the right size bit that will be tought to strip.

I think I'd soak it with some pb blaster and let it sit for a couple days, maybe tap it with a hammer on occasion.

Try until you strip it. If you do, weld a nut on and get it with a wrench. Done this many times.

Had the same issue 3 weeks ago. I almost stripped the head and was still not able to open it up. Ended up pumping the oil out with a $7 transfer pump from HF (which I bought for filling initially) through the fill plug

Thanks for the replies. I'll work on it again in the morning and report back.

Update: Beat with a ball peen hammer this morning and went full King Kong on it with a 1/2 drive ratchet and 3/8 adaptor on my 10mm allen socket and it finally broke loose. No stripping, no snapping of the allen, all is good. Thanks for the replies!
