Help! Got new wheels and tires and can't find dirt. Aren't there at least some public Access roads?

Anybody got any key words or websites to help find some public access dirt roads to use a little 4 wheel drive and do some camping? I've tried Where2wheel but to there's not much around Albany. I'm GIS guy so I've been searching national Park datasets and maps for good roads. Just wondering if anyone else is interested in the same.

Ok, so the second one won't help you much, but... hey, it's my neighborhood.

 

Also, national parks are not that great, given they don't always allow much backcountry access to motor vehicles. Better to try state parks or BLM land.

 

I'm down for some road trips eventually. I got peeps in California. Just gotta get a little dirt nearby to keep the 4 wheel drive in shape. Thanks for the link!

 

Trails offroad is horrible. It's either completely outdated or they simple dont give a crap about anything east of the Mississippi.

 

If you lived in Tennessee, Windrock Park is an awesome place.

 

Yeah! I've been looking at BLM and state parks but their maps are PDFs or not really clear what's a dirt road(beginner level off road). If this data is not out there I'm going to create it.

 

You might want to try finding some books. I tried looking on Amazon, and there are way more books for offroad trails in CA and the Southwest.

A lot of the best trail books tend to be specialties and published in low quantities. A lot are spiral-bound, and not easy to find on Amazon. The gift shops in the parks sometimes sell them.

 

So the internet hasn't found all the good stuff yet? I'm down for paper. Im old school.

 

Just be careful with the clubs. I was part of 2 (no names) and they've become extremely political and it wasn't about the fun of the sport anymore. It was all about paying dues and not pissing off the club presidents.

 

Have you checked out the “region “ section? Perhaps you can hook up with someone in your neck of the woods.

My area has more dirt roads than paved roads.

 

I’m sure there are trails near you in the Adirondacks.
Google “off road trails Adirondacks”.

Or head out route 7 to Vermont.
