I'd like to see a head to head video of a 3rd gen and a 2nd gen doing the same section of highway in the mountains, just to see what the shifting is like in both.

I think a lot of guys need to go spend time in a 2nd Gen in the mountains. I get to do that every couple months, and it’s no revelation. The 2nd Gen Taco was no mountain powerhouse either. Both trucks don’t hold a candle to even a 4 cylinder Camry in the mountains. The 2G Taco is also a dead-pedal buzzy V6, only with worse fuel economy and slightly better drivability due to lack of 6th gear. Shift your 3G Taco into S5 and you pretty much have a 2G Taco, or close enough.

I am not saying your driving a piece of crap, I like the 3rd gen. I enjoy going over the coquihalla and I watch how much it shifts going up the climbs at 70 mph and it's not often. And driving in the Kamloops area I'm getting around 18mpg avg and we are hilly here.
I would like to see what's really going on for shifting in the 3rd gen on climbs, at some point I'll be looking to trade in but I'm definitely in no rush.

Yes for sure, and I agree with you, so don’t take what I said wrong.

My point is mostly that it wasn’t like the 2G Taco was some incredible powerful vehicle that Toyota somehow completely buggered up with the 3G. That’s just not the case. If there was no 3G, fellas would be calling the 2G gutless in the mountains. I admit the 2G does feel more powerful, and shifts less, but the difference is not a great as people make out, in my opinion.

Not to turn this into a transmission thread, because god knows there are enough of those, but here’s my take. The busy shifting is exaggerated by cruise control. It waits too long, downshifts too far, accelerates fast then upshifts too far. And then repeat depending on your load or hill length.

If you take it out of cruise and go s4 or s5 like @Stocklocker said it behaves far more appropriately.

Sounds stupid, but I believe it is true: the exhaust note is much more prominent on the 3G Tacoma’s, so you hear all the jazz that’s going on. As ridiculous as it might seem, if Toyota put more sound deadening in the 3G Tacoma’s so the driver was not so acutely aware of what the drivetrain was doing, there’d be far less complaints. If you turn up the stereo and don’t look at the tach, things seem mostly normal. It’s the sound of the shifts, and the low RPM lugging nature of the new drivetrain that is annoying. The actual drive isn’t that much different than the 2G if you ignore your senses.

Sounds good, if we go out for a test drive I'll avoid using cruise control when it's hilly.

You should give it a go. I didn’t figure it out until later. I would have loved to hear what the salesman had to say if I would have done it on a test drive. Even just to hear them say it was normal would give me a chuckle.

I’ve owned several Tacoma’s. Last was a ‘17 Limited and absolutely hated the AT shifting...traded it after 10 months. Took delivery of my 2020 AG Pro last week. AT shifting is significantly improved over ‘17’s!!!

Supposedly the 2020 is completely remapped. I am told it makes a dramatic difference for acceleration off a stop. I have no info on the shifting and gear changes.....
I just put deposit on a 2020.... Anything is better then my 2016 slushy off road.
I am told noise reduction is better on the 2019s and up.... I hope

You could have done OV tune to the 2017 TRD Pro and saved yourself a lot of money.

My wife and I have 17' and 18' Pro trucks. The shifting isn't great but I can live with it. I'll prob be in the market for a 2020 once I see the reviews lol My local dealer is sold out and the wait is months out. For those of you who ordered one how long does it take?

If you had gotten the 2017 Pro in manual I would venture to guess that the vehicle you would currently have and have moving forward would be the 2017 Pro. Love my MT Pro!
