Massive Crane Collapse! (video)

yup. A few projects I have worked on have had cranes. At one, Pasadena Convention Center, my office was under the crane!

 

Hope it does not fall onto the hockey rink or i ll be one Piss of hockey player.

 

Oh dang that sucks! Crazy stuff!!

 

I absolutely love cranes and wouldnt mind designing some some day. But when things go wrong, it's scary.

 

Sad isnt it. At least they wont have to work and can take care of the kids.

 

BWAHAHAHA Reminds me of when I saw something similar to that. When the dust settled some guy says "Did something give?" No shit Einstein!

Part of the reason for the payout was as a penalty to the contractor using the crane. Thing is, the operator of the crane said it was too windy to make that pick. One of the superintendents for the GC said he knew how to operate the crane and would make the pick himself. The crane folks called OSHA, and it was OSHA filming the pick. The superintendent went to jail and the owner of the stadium had nearly a billion dollar settlement because of all the lost revenue (the project ended a year late and had 3 deaths in that single incident).

Yeah IIRC this was a total blunder caused by picking in the wind, they didn't want to call it off because of the downtime costs

 

Thanks for that clarification sooner. The guy never told me about the billion dollar settlement!

 

Was that stadium a city contract? Because some cities can be a pain to work with. They want stuff done now!

 

My uncle was at Miller park that day. He is an ironworker and it was a terrible accident.

I have been on a couple jobs where they have had cranes fail, and tip over.
Not allways the operators fault. Anything mechanical can break.

The first video looked to be assembling the large crane when something let go or was released at the wrong time.

Worked with some helicopters placing piping where a crane could not reach. Not bad untill they landed the copter about 10:00 in the morning and took all the doors off and seats out except the pilots to make the last couple picks due to the air temp increasing so quickly.
Not a lot of fun landing the pipe in place under the copter that is just able to fly with the load on it.

I have been pretty lucky over the years.

I don't know if it was a tri-party agreement with the city or not, I'd venture to guess it was...

But I am working on a job for the city of Dallas now, and they are not very eay to work with.

They showed us this one in Apprentice school. I hope I never see a crane collapse in person...
