Paint on Inside of Jerrycan Is Coming Off

The paint inside my jerry can is beginning to peel off.

The last time I emptied it, 3 or 4 pieces of bright shiny red paint (1 to 2 square inches each) got stuck inside the can ahead of the spout, reducing flow to a trickle. The flakes were flexible and did not crumble. The can is one of the last non-CARB cans.

I suppose I could put a piece of screen between the can's opening and the spout before I pour the gas into the truck. I just don't want to wind up 75 miles from nowhere with a jammed-up fuel pump.

Any other suggestions??

 

Sounds like it was made in China.

 

Filter the gas and use it in your lawn mower or snowblower, easier to replace a clogged fuel filter. Then have it sandblasted.

I'd recommend ditching the metal can(s) and going with the plastic Scepter brand ones that the military uses these days. They aren't cheap, but they are much more durable than the metal cans of old. No paint to peel, no rust to form. Due to regulations, it's hard to find these available to purchase from retailers, but you can often find them on eBay. Look for prices in the ~$90/can for a good deal (ignore the ~$200/can auctions).

Buy a new plastic can.
You can get a conversion kit for like $8 (comes in a bag next to the gas cans) to make it just like the old ones. It comes with the vent cap, a new filler neck and filler cap. All you do is drill a hole on the top rear of the can and you are set!

while gas is not a paint thinner in itself, it can remove paint. Not saying to stop using your jerrycan, but expect it to happen again. I'm guessing you are pouring through a funnel when you fill your truck? Put a mesh filter at the bottom of the funnel and when it is clogged, stop pouring and pick the paint flakes off
