Looks like a generic copy. I recently lost the valet key to my 4Runner. Instead of spending $115 to replace it, I had a $5 copy made at Home Depot. It'll unlock the doors, but won't start the engine. Good for when I go to the beach and I only need a key to unlock the truck and don't care if it gets wet.

The key on the right doesn’t look to be the type to have a transponder chip within it.
It will likely only open the doors. Maybe the glovebox as well.

It’s been a long time but, I think my grey key wound not unlock the glovebox?
I know there was something about the black key that the grey would not do.

Grey key is valet key. Both my 4Runner and Tacoma came with one. It was pointless for the Tacoma as I didn't have a locking glovebox.

I have the exact opposite problem. I only have one key, and it just starts the engine. I have to use the key fob to get in

that's right folks, the key that starts the truck won't open it

Oil the door lock. My locksmith recommends Triflow.

I recently found out I have the same problem, how did I find out might you ask? My battery "died"(corroded contacts) and my doors were locked...

The solution? Hooked up a spare battery to the positive terminal on the starter, grounded to the frame and it was enough juice to pop the locks. I also threw some Dri-Slide into the locks, it didn't work right away but seems to have freed things up by now.

I tried it. I even used Triflow as you commented. it didn't work.

But thank you for the suggestion anyway

OK, from there, the fix is still very easy. Open the door. On the edge of the door is a round black plastic plug. Pop it out. Then you will see a torx head bolt. Turn the bolt about 8 turns. There's a plastic clip that prevents the bolt from falling inside the door. Then just pull the lock out and take it to a locksmith and tell them to fix it so your key works.

Note: When the lock is out, the door handle comes out very easy. It goes back in just as easy. Just so you know.

I have the opposite problem to the OP. I have a copied key that opens the doors and starts the engine but my OEM Toyota pair are hit and miss....

They sometimes require jiggling of the keys and moving the steering wheel to start the truck. The copy has never had an issue. I think something is wearing in the ignition cylinder and the copy has lower tolerance than oem ones. :notsure:

Either the OEM keys or the locks are worn. The person that cut the copys is either a genius and compensated for the wear or they got lucky making an inaccurate copy. Take the truck to a locksmith and ask them what's going on. A good locksmith can look at a key and tell exactly what the problem is.
