Answer: Ive known Owens Valley and Eastern Sierra since childhood.....Lee Vining the town was originally called Lake View, when they got around to getting a post office they found "Lake View" was already taken, so the townsfolk looked around and decided on Lee Vining, for Leroy Vining a longtime and well liked resident.....he was a teamster and one day when hauling lumber out of the mill down Benton way to Bodie a revolver he had tucked in his pants went off over rough ground......the folks in Bodie wondering where their lumber was found him bled out next to his wagon and team. He was apparently really missed....leevineing is part of my email addy, my name is James and I appreciate the multiple gallon reserve as we often far afield

Hi James, that is an interesting story. I think I have heard part of it but I never had the whole context. We love the Eastern Sierra too, especially the back country. It's so immense, it takes a minute to take it all in when you live in So Cal where it's pretty built out. We really like Eastern Sierra stories. We often stop in this little book store in Bishop that carries a lot of local authors and has many interesting Eastern Sierra stories. The last one we got was the story of Convict lake.

We are going up in less than two weeks, so I'm looking forward to some back country exploring and hikes.

csp-65........maybe we'll see you on the trail some day....good book is "Mono Diggings" by Frank Wedertz, and "Inyo Trail Guide". Yes, and that's only the end of Lee Vining story.....If you get the time, Independence has the EASTERN SIERRA MUSEUM just west of 395 in the middle of town...you can ask Linda at RAYS DEN MOTEL if you cant find it.

Nomad...when we come up to Idaho we stay at the Airport Inn, eat at Michel's Christiana and China Panda in Ketchum. Our destination is usually to go up the Wood as far as the hot spring and over the hill to Lost, if you know the Wild Horse, I'll be glad to tag along next time I'm up.

Thank you! that would be fun. We are usually looking for something to do on the way up because we leave early and we usually cannot get into our condo before 4pm.

I'd go with NATO/jerry cans instead of Rotopax. You can pick them up for under $50, they hold more, and you're not locked into a proprietary system. If you need a carrier, everyone makes them.

Just my 2 cents. Rotopax are cool, too; not trying to upset anyone. If space is a premium and you've already got a rad bed rack then Rotopax might be the right way to go...

To add to this you have to vent them when changing altitudes/ambient temps otherwise they'll literally rip at the seems and leak fuel everywhere.... learned this the hard way -_-

Don't know if jerry cans are any different but after that I swore off rotopax for good. Still have two that I use but won't ever buy them again.

Edit: just did some googling and apparently because of CARB laws its illegal to buy a "vented" gas can, so even jerry cans will have the same problem. But I think jerry cans being metal means they at least won't rip open and start leaking fuel everywhere like the plastic rotopax. Guess I just have to remember to pull over and vent my cans every few thousand feet or if I go from like freezing temps to 60 degrees as I descend a mountain.
