Yup. For the most part. The gmrs mobiles run way more power and the uhf ham band is a ton more too. But that's a whole nother convention haha

Yeah I didn't realize until recently that my GMRS running 5 watts is more power than a (non SSB) CB. You also don't need a license for CB, though...

CB is 4w, CB ssb is 12, most gmrs ht are 5w, GMRS mobile 50w.

The power is great, but you have to have people on the same gear to talk to them haha. It's catching on. More affordable options are popping up. I'm a fan. But the best comms to use are whatever everyone else on the ride is using.

Thanks man appreciate it. If I don't have a setup by then I'll be sure to let you know. I think the ride is in Newport NH.

That's the best point so far. It doesn't really matter if you have the coolest most wiz-bang UHF radio on the market, if you're the only one in the group with one, lol.

I have a couple GMRS (capable) radios, and most of the people I tend to run with either have their own GMRS or nothing (so they borrow my spare).

wait, 50w?? damn. Just did a little searching, and the Midland MXT400, while spendy (for me), is pretty cool since it can talk with the handhelds, too, and has gobs of power. I like the idea of a dash mounted system, and had been considering a CB, mostly because they are so cheap nowadays. Might look into a 40-50w GMRS, if the price is right. FOr now though, the handhelds have more than enough range for my needs.

Yup. Nix that. More affordable power / cost

Doesn't matter if you use 50KW. You're not going to be able to hear the other guy unless he's running 50KW.

I wish people would quit buying those garbage chinese HTs.... They are dirty splatter machines.

If people are going to bootleg ham frequencies, they should at least use DMR.

So would a hand held cb, connected to a good magnet mount antenna, be just as good as a dedicated mobile cb with the same antenna?

ETA, TW really should have a dedicated "coms" section.

Yep. Most of the good handhelds have that option.

And there are a few comms threads. Depending on your flavor. Both CB and Ham
