    Fuck this state.

It gets worst every year regarding automotive. The laws are being so complex and skewed that not even they know what it actually is. You have to talk to 13 different people just to get a straight answer.

And don't forget that this year everyone pays from $25 to $100 more (depending on value of your car) on the registration. It's called Transportation Improvement Fee. Apparently California needs more money to fix the roads

Every time I hear a rant about how oppressive California is but then the complainer chooses to stay there, I picture a man eating a plate of jalapenos, complaining about how overwhelmingly spicy they are, but then he gets back up to the buffet and loads his plate with another pound of peppers.

That's a great analogy because jalapenos aren't even that spicy!

Not a fan of the DMV, but if you have all your paperwork in order and have read the instructions on what you are supposed to do, it goes pretty fast. However, I have found if you have a question about something you can get six different answers from six different people. There often is no consistency of knowledge among employees. I've had to go a couple of rounds over fees and plates a couple of times and prevailed because the clerk didn't know their job. A lot of what they do is pretty simple because it's described in the CA Vehicle Code which is written in pretty simple language. What the clerks don't understand is the VC drives everything they do from process to fees. The only authority they have is what has been given to them via the law. It's a permissive system; they can only do what the law gives them permission to do. They seem to think it's a system of limits, that they can do whatever they want unless the law says they can't. They also think "There ought to be a fee for that". They can't collect a fee unless it is described in the VC. I've won on that. I had a fee dispute that ultimately went to the (Director or Commissioner, I don't recall the title) where I won after their attorney examined the claim after the six or so levels of employees who all had different and ultimately incorrect opinions.

CA fees are high, but they are high in a few other states too. It is what it is.

Thought I'd take a moment to chime in and say that this year's tags cost me under 60 bucks here in VA. Yeah we have a state inspection. Fix your lights and make sure the basic stuff like brakes are working, pay your $16, and you're good to go. Not hard and prevents dangerous shitboxes from putting people in danger.

California is really a cool place and a good time. People are chill, there's something for everyone. Always love visiting but I wouldn't live there. If you're a Californian and you're ready to get out, please do the rest of the world a favor and DON'T Californianize wherever you move to by immediately voting in the same big-government pols and then complaining how your new home is just as expensive and messed-up as the old one. I'm from WA state originally and I've seen it first-hand.

    Ahhhhh let the h8 flow:stirthepot:

You forgot to mention VA's annual property tax on vehicles. CA is zero.

And what’s with private offroad “adventure parks” where you have to pay? Pretty much the entire eastern half of our state is a public offroad adventure park- and dang, try to find a legal public offroad remote camping spot back east or in the midwest, even in a state as big as Texas!:annoyed:

Yeah, but you get to live in Hawaii!! At this point in my life, the only other state I would consider moving to is Hawaii. I love that place.
