I was changing the fluid in my transmission. Couldn’t find my fluid transfer pump so last resort was to borrow one from a shop. It appeared empty at the time but I don’t know what they used it for prior (probably all sorts of fluids have gone through it.) Should I be worried about contamination from residual fluids? I didn’t see any actual measurable amount of fluid in it but just the residuals that would stick to the wall etc...

You can always flush it out prior to use.

Wouldn’t worry or wouldn’t use it? Lol

I didn’t have anything to flush with and didn’t want to get water or something else introduced in it.

Just use some common sense and spend the 10 bucks for a new pump.

You guys are right. But I drained the fluid and the pump I had didn’t work. My car was up on the lifts and I had no way to get a pump before the shop closed. So I had no choice :(

I do plan on draining and refilling in a few months though. Since it wasn’t a full flush I thought I would drain and fill a couple times in a short period.

There are at least 3 different scenarios here

You already used the pump to transfer the fluid.

    Answer:

    1. It’s in there there now. So you can either drain and refill.
Or run what you put in. I’d personally run what you put in, ONLY IF you did NOT hear or see any signs of fluid left in the transfer pump PRIOR to filling. (This sounds like your case?)

    2. You can flush the Transfer Pump with NEW Trans Fluid.
Then use the transfer pump to fill.

    3. Don’t use the “used” pump and get a new pump.

I can’t see most shops buying a NEW pump each time they service a Trans.
I’m guessing most flush the pump with what ever NEW fluid they are going to be using.
    If they even do that?

If you’ve already started the truck since filling. I wouldn’t worry about it.
Not unless you want to do a full system drain. Which is not to fun to do.

I don't think I'd be worried. As civil engineers like to say, dilution is the solution to pollution.

Well it just depends on what it was used for. If only atf then you're probably fine. I have one that I used for years while filling atf but I always flush it with new fluid each time that I use it.

    +1 on all points.

Not so bad to use the pump for different fluids, but should ALWAYS wipe inside down as best you can and flush tank and lines with fresh fluid before adding to your system.

I wouldn’t worry. Residual stuff won’t hurt much. Think about the amount in relation to how much you just put in it. If it was Anything like solvents, gas etc, it probably would’ve evaporated by the time you used it so I doubt it was that. I’m sure it’s fine.
