I am involved with alot of flood control projects. Part of which includes mitigation planting after the fact. We have success criteria for the planting and yearly reports reporting on that (mitigation monitoring). Usually by year 5 or 10 we need to have some criteria of percent survival, percent cover, diameter basal height, blah blah. Then if we do the regulators sign off and we are off the hook. I work with this old hippy horticulturist/restoration ecologist (love her) that is always stressing the soil prep and not overwatering (tap root development). I guess she got through to me.

I would just learn to detect the signs of stress on the plant that comes from under watering. If you dont see them, then leave it be.
