What size tires are you planning on running? and any extra weight?

I have a 5spd, but i have 4.88s and 295/70/17s. I wish i wouldve gone with 5.29s. With the auto, i'd go with 5.29s from the start if you plan on running 285s or larger

Thanks, That's the imfo. I'm looking for, the opinion from someone who's actually done it. If I shift my trans. from D to 3, at 65 mph. it gains appx. 800 rpm. & way too much for hwy. driving. I was thinking maybe 400 rpm increase may work good. From the differential gear ratio calculator I'm using, Your truck with the 5 spd. manual 295/70/17 & "4.88" gears should be turning 2560 rpm. @ 65 mph. According to the calculator, my truck with the Auto trans & 265/70/17 & "5.29" gears should turn 2559 @ 65 mph. Decisions, decisions. Thanks

Access cabs and regular cabs could have the 2.7 and 4wd. I believe all the 2.7L Double cabs were prerunners or 2wd though

Hey Ackwards, If you had gone with 5.29, you'd be turning 2776 rpm. @ 65 mph., a lot more than I would be comfortable with, that's about where my Taco runs in 3rd with converter unlocked. Mine with the 5.29 should be doing appx. 2559 @ 65 mph., that's about what yours should be doing now with your 4.88. That may be OK, but I'm thinking that will be a little more than I was looking for. Wish you were close to mid. TN. I'd like to see just what yours feels like. Thanks for the imfo.

Yeah mine turns around 3k rpms @ 75mph. It should be a little less with the auto but do what you think is best based on what youll use it most for!
Here's a site that is great for comparing different ratios

4.88, 2.7 Auto. Isn’t that what you asked about?

Not sure. About 2500 I think. Satisfied? No, not really. It’s soooo underpowered. Any small incline and I still need to manually force it to downshift to 3rd or I continuously lose speed. This motor has no power until about 3800rpm. I have to rev it to moon to get it to move. I’m planning to convert to a manual trans so I can have more control (and the manual puts less drag on the motor).

I think 5.29’s would be better but you have to be ok with running 3000k all the time. I pretty much am now since I spend a lot of time in 3rd on the hwy. Many times I’m in 3rd @70mph.

Yeah, I know the 2.7 W/ auto, will never be comfortable to drive, but just trying to make a little less of a dog than it is now. Trying to find the best compromise. Personally I don't want the eng. screaming, like it does in 3 rd. & a 5.29 will be getting the rpm. up near that range. When you changed from the 4.11 to the 4.88 could you feel a noticeable difference, or was it not enough to tell you'd changed anything. From what I'm finding, changing to a 4.88 should make it about 1/2 way between driving in D or driving in 3 rd., or driving in D with the torque converter unlocked. Thanks for all opinions.

It’s noticeable. I don’t really worry too much about the rpm. It’s was built to be happy around 3800.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
LS1 swap would fix all that
