Can you install the 3.4l with the torque inverter bolted to the drive plate or do I need to put the torque inverter on the transmission first then put the motor in and bolt them up

it has to go on the transmission first. There are things inside the torque convertor that need to engage things inside of the transmission or you will destroy your transmission.

Don't do that!!!!. Unless you want to buy a new front pump for the transmission!

I used a slim piece of metal hold the torque converter in place while I installed the engine. Once I had the engine lined up during installation, I pulled out the piece of metal. It would have been better if the piece of metal was completely flat, but it did the job.

You should be able to rotate the torque converter after you install the engine to make sure its not in a bind against the flex plate before installing the black bolt.

Well I have never seen that before ^. I've done 4 trans/converter installs and not noticed or put in a black bolt first. Not saying it's a bad idea, just never noticed it before!

If it were me, I would. I don't see how you could really get it set in properly with it still bolted to the flexplate. You'll eff up your pump and then you'll really be in a pickle having to pull the whole thing out again. Maybe just drop the trans and insert the converter and bolt it all together again.

Well it was in all the way because I took it apart drained the torque converter then refilled with fluid cuz there was a little bit of metal shavings lol then I cleaned the input shaft off put the converter on the trans until it went all the way back then lined up the motor and it was just at far back as it was when I did it with it on the motor it was just rough the other way lol but being I have no time to fuck around I'm buttoning her back up as we have got to move.. if something Is messed up tranny wise I'll know what it is and fix it later¿ live and learn and break shit yup
