I’m pretty sure OVtune doesn’t make anymore power down low. Simply makes the throttle response and shifting better. Makes a couple more ponies up top with the increased redline.

These engine are so oversquare they're never gonna make good low end without boost. I got used to the soft bottom end.

It’s pretty common knowledge here that the engine wakes up a lot above 3000rpm. But your dissatisfaction with the way it tows your boat does seem a little abnormal.

I’d probably advise finding someone in your area that is a 3rd gen owner to do a ride along with you, and see what their impressions are. Maybe there is something wrong with your truck.

There are bound to be a number of Tacoma groups in Tennessee willing to help.

I would also suggest changing the title of this thread to be more descriptive.

I tow a 3500 pound cargo trailer religiously and have never ever had a problem with the power my truck makes. I'm not sure what it is supposed to be doing according to some. My truck has almost 47k miles on it and has had a trailer attached to it for probably a 1/3rd of those miles. Flat Midwestern land, or Appalachian mountains, don't matter. Truck tows at the speed limit and then some easily.

Gearing and braking complaints I will join the conversation, but even as pokey as the truck is without a trailer, it tows fine.

It won't hurt the truck to run higher rpms while towing, it's making torque to move you. Yea it has a soft bottom end, but it doesn't bother me much, not really an aggressive driver.

The other night on the interstate a subaru brz was messing w me, he couldn't pass me from a few runs of 80-105, man that thing was slooooow. Lol

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Wait? you were doing up to 105 and racing on the interstate hwy.? " he couldn't pass me from a few runs of 80-105" ?? -- the only thing that NEEDS to happen to you - is - you need to be arrested for WAY excessive speed. You and the Subaru driver I might add, before you and the other driver kill some other innocent people!. Nuff said.

You mean the Dodge with the Hemi badging? You do know that the Dodge Hemi is NOT a Hemispherical motor? They stopped making the hemi long ago and now it's just a regular old 8 cylinder motor no different than a Chevy, Ford, Toyota, Nissan and all the other V8s on the market. HEMI....

You had V8 power not Hemi power

Funny thing is, OV meets and beats EPA standards.

So that’s a pretty lame excuse for Toyota.

MPGs and EPA standards are not the same thing. You might get better MPGs but pollute a lot more. Have you had your truck hooked up to a smog machine to verify your claims?

Not bashing OV, he has a big following. Just pointing out MPGs and EPA don’t go hand in hand.

    It depends.

Over the early Toyota Calibrations, there is a noticeable difference in 2000 - 3000 rpm response (torque increase that peaked at ~ +25lbs/ft @3100). Toyota later "fixed" this by updating their calibration. Ovtune dev thread and his website has all of this info (dyno charts).
