Not good. Got the <check engine> + <trac off> warning Codes Added

So I cranked up this lovely Fall morning and lo and behold, I get the Check Engine light plus Trac Off light. So I come here as my think tank for all things Tacoma.

I read parts of a 54 page thread and my takeaway was - buy a tuner. That was on Gen 2 Tacos and different engines

Anyone solve this problem?
Solved without buying something other than a parts replacement?

You should probably start by pulling the code to see what the deal is, imo. Can go from there on diagnosis.

 

Pull the code, figure out what the issue is before a maybe solution

 

Yeah, see what the code is...maybe something as simple as your gas tank lid not on...

 

Sounds like crank position sensor

 

On my Solara, the Trac light always came on when I got a CEL. Probably not related to the Trac.

 

I had my 2016 OR stall and have those lights on, turned out to be crankshaft position sensor like Jake was saying. Mine was one of the ones that there was a recall for that sensor, I just hadn't gotten it done since I was living in Alaska at the time far from a dealership.

My dad has this issue and it was diagnosed as a faulty wheel speed sensor, which also affects ABS. But he lives in San Diego and nearly never drives on loose surfaces, so instead of replacing the sensor, his solution was to put a piece of black tape over the dash lights.

 

Mine was for three fuel injectors that shit the bed.

Yep, that's the one. It's went off and on all the way home. I'll try to find what codes it's throwing

 

I got that once. I have a scangauge so I just pulled over and read the code and cleared it. Truck was back to normal and it hasn't popped up again. Love the scangauge.

 

It's just one code. But manufacturers place backup measures to ensure shady stuff like bulb deletes don't affect the consumers ability to detect faults.

Old days you could remove the CEL bulb and never see it again. But standards have changed to ensure that cars arent running around with faults undetected, so other modules have to alarm the driver as well.

First thing that crossed my mind too.

 

Charcoal canister failure. You can try to remove it and see if any dirt is clogging it up. These series of codes is common, 99% of the time the canister requires replacement. Its big money, 300$ for a knock off, 800$ for oem.
