Hybrid engine

How does an engine option ruin the Tacoma? And I hate to break it to you, but Toyota wants to be all electric (at least as an option) within just a few years from now.

 

True, they are spending billions on battery R&D

 

The wife has Prius C and it consistently gets 50 mpg. She’s had it for 7 years now so I was wondering about when the battery pack might poop out and found information that not only said battery packs have lasted 250,000 miles there’s a company that will come to you and replace it for $1,300. I’m not worried one bit about reliability of a hybrid.
Edit: $1,300 gets you a rebuilt battery pack with 18 month warranty, $1,900 gets you a new battery pack with 36 month warranty.

 

Not to mention an electric Tacoma would likely be far more powerful than our current engines, and possibly more powerful than any v8 Toyota would throw in there.

The hybrid battery from the Toyota dealer costs much more than even $2400 by itself. I've done the research before unloading our Prius last year at 250,000 miles. The dealer wanted nearly $4000 for a battery. The cheapest I could get a reputable aftermarket battery (imported Chinese) was $1600 and put it in myself. The car was worth $3200 and still running, so we sold it.

Like I've said before, once the hybrid battery goes the car is inoperable even though the engine is fine. And the hybrids only assist in 10-20% better gas mileage. Modern Hybrids are the biggest scam ever in the automobile industry.

The new all gas Toyota Corolla Hatchback 2.0L 168HP gets 35 mpg. Toyota cars in the 1970's got nearly 40 mpg. The auto industry has done barely anything to improve mpg even with CAFE.

This is not a rant on you, just a rant in general.

They also didn't have airbags, ABS, air conditioning, sound deadening materials, sub 10 second 0-60 times, and others I surely missed. For every increase in efficiency over those 40 years, there's been a creature comfort or safety feature that took it away.

 

And a rant without substance.

1) Yes, the dealer replacement for the battery is expensive. The operative word in that being "dealer". ANY part or service from the dealer costs a substantial amount more than an independent shop or doing it yourself. You can buy kits to do it in your driveway.

2) The battery argument is just like any other part argument. If you were to need a new $5000 engine from the dealer on a $3200 car it would be foolish to do it. Hardly a unique hybrid problem.

3) The current Corolla vs 1970s cars argument completely ignores the emissions differences. Using just one simple metric to argue a point on a multi-faceted issue isn't logical.

 

You kind of sound like you haven't been paying attention to auto manufacturers for a while. Take a look at Ferrari, Audi, BMW. All known for driving experience, torque and speed. They're all coming out with hybrid not because it's more fuel efficient, because they offer instant torque. Fuel efficiency is a benefit, but you can bet your bottom dollar Ferrari isn't creating vehicles for people worried about pump prices.

 

I work for volvo and dream what my truck would be like with t8 power. 400hp and 490+ ft pounds would do this truck nice. Plus mid 30s+ mpg and a stealth drive mode. Volvo hybrid is weird though and wouldnt work for our application.

More realistic would be what they are doing turning some porsches hybrid with aftermarket flywheel mounted motor and small battery. Still huge money until tech gets cheaperhttp://vonnen.com/

Likely going to be a hybrid option as well as a twin turbo 4cyl option, just like the Tundra (except it's getting a twin turbo 3.5l v6).

No way they're putting a v8 in the Tacoma when they are phasing it out of the Tundra, smaller motors plus turbos are more emissions friendly
