Last year I rented a mustang convertible. The car had an amazing rumble with the top down, until I found a tunnel. At the entrance I gave it all the skinny pedal I had, expecting to hear the monstrous echoes reverberating off the walls, but no. It sounded the exact same as if I were out on the open road. Good sound, but it was also the only sound that had no echo, which is really confusing on the ears to hear. I could hear my tire drone echoing, the engine from the minivan that I passed, wind noise, all had that tunnel reverb, but not my engine. Thats when I knew I was driving a yellow tub of lies...

Mustang motors only echo when they have the spirited glee of knowing they are going full bore into a crowd of spectators at a local cars & coffee event.

had to google this just out of curiosity. I cannot believe that this is actually a thing lmfao. Jesus christ, people complain about what cars come from the factory with but at the end of the day the factories only pump out what the people want, even if it is just a tube that routes engine noises. But then they send it like the people wanted from the factory and then you have people that insist on removing the sound tube. Can't make everyone happy.

Kind of like people complain that the Tacoma factory tuning and shifting is funky and sucks, but at the same time you have threads where people complain about the stock gas mileage, or people that lift and add 285s and again complain of mileage.

Hybrid is going to hopefully be one way to satisfy all parties, nice torque and power off the line, and happy mileage numbers.

Battery life is too short, can't jerry can extra battery juice, can't find a 220 plug in town, charge time is too long, power bill went up (so what my gas bill is offsetting). Just opens new things to bitch about.

Make sure you take some spare batteries with you when you go overlanding. The truck will literally die out there. :frusty:

don't overlanders love slapping multiple batteries and solar panels onto a vehicle already? Dudes would be all over the fact that they could easy run a pure sine wave 1000watt inverter to power a 55" flat screen, water heater, fridge, and microwave for ultimate brolanding lol

I agree. The X90 T8 hybrid makes 400 HP, can tow 5000 lbs, 0-60 in 5 seconds, and 58 mpg. Not bad specs.

Costs $75K. Oh well, you pay for the performance I guess.

Even accepting your numbers, I don't see the point here. You drove a car for 250K (10 years? 15 years?) miles and it requires a $4000 maintenance to keep running. You must have liked it to drive it into the ground.

The break-even point for a Prius compared with a similar all-gas vehicle is 7 years, so you're still ahead of the game.

Priuses get 50+ mpg routinely. For people who drive a lot and keep their cars a few years it's a very rational choice.

I will say my ARB fridge has been worthy. Having popsicles in Moab after a hot MTB ride is priceless. Soggy sandwiches ruin my day too.

2.5 times more powerful engine, pushing 1.5 times the curb weight, with unknown amount (crap ton) fewer emissions allowed, and a cruising speed much faster than the old 55mph national limit: - same mileage achieved.

I would argue that the mileage technology has grown at an astonishing rate with modern engines, given all the punishing demands we put on them now that weren't there in the 70's.

Not to mention, getting hit in that thing by a Honda Civic would result in death. Same accident in today's Corolla wouldn't even garner a medic check.

Under 2,000 lbs curb weight, I had my tacoma weighed yesterday with me (300lbs) and an almost full tank of gas weighed in at 4,900lbs.

An electric car isn’t good for overlanding? And in other shocking news....
Miatas aren’t good for crossing the arctic.
    Chevy Sparks can’t tow boats.
    Corvettes can’t haul a family of 8.
Nissan Versas aren’t good for hitting 11 sec quarter mile times.

I'm skeptical about the Tacoma going hybrid as Toyota likes to keep things old-school with their trucks. I think one of the domestics will go hybrid before them.

I could see a turbocharged 4 replacing the v6 however. That i'd welcome. Match that up with a good 8-10spd auto, shave some lbs off the total weight of the truck, and it should be plenty capable and tq'y. Hybrid systems add 200+lbs on smaller sedans (I'm sure more on a truck with bigger battery pack) which would affect payload.

Tons of vehicles have this. Lexus, BMW, Volkswagen, and Ford (just the ones that I know of) are using fake engine noises and they're not always coming through a tube through the firewall. Some are actually playing engine noise through the speakers. I know Lexus IS300, BMW M5 and Volkswagen GLI now simulate engine noises through the speakers

Y'all want a good sounding naturally aspirated V8? Drive one of these. I giggle every time I hit a tunnel or drive under an overpass and hit 7,000 RPM. They make a hybrid version of this which is supposedly amazing but after driving the V8 my mind was made up.

On a related note, Toyota released some details of the new plug-in RAV4 that will be officially unveiled at the LA Auto Show in November. IMG_0258.jpg
