Watts/Amperage of Stock Side Running Light Wires

Hi all,

After my last camping trip even with my fog lights I noticed that I would still like some more accessory lighting for the road. ( Drove down the mountain at night to avoid traffic lol ), I was wondering what the stock wiring for the side running lights could handle watts/amperage wise? I want to change my turn signals into the running lights housings, and to punch out the housing of the stock turn signals location and use some amber light pods like this angled down as running lights.

The turn signal fuse is a 15A, and tail lights (I think the same circuit as the side markers) is 10A, iirc, if you want to be able to exceed that, you'll need to re-wire with larger gauge wiring, too.

If you're going thru this much work, It's probably easier to just rewire.

There's also the "proper headlight upgrade" that you should consider, too. It's a wiring harness that replaces all the stock wire with much larger wires, and connects direct to the battery, and still uses the stock harness with relays (i.e. it's plug and play). Even if you just use stock(ish) bulbs, they get a bit brighter because of the direct connection to the battery. If you do that, though, just get new CAPA certified housings from rockauto, and the main thing that diminishes light output is fogged/scratched lenses. Those refurb kits only go so far...

Hardest part of the install is mounting the relays and having enough zipties (i.e. not very hard, lol)

 

I might rewire then, can i splice into the same mounting point for the previous wire to use when my running lights are on? I'd hate to go through all the effort and have to add another button with a wiring kit lol Gonna have to look for that light upgrade too, I haven't seen or heard of it yet. Thanks! I have a fair congregation growing of zipties under my hood from the fog lights I have currently, more the merrier

The wiring is ~$100, and the headlights from Rockauto are like $80/pr. The Osram bulbs I hear are hard to come by these days, but I didn't even go that route. I still have my dumpy Sylvania's, but I still noticed a marked improvement in light (also likely due to the new housings).

The safest route would be to use some relays like the upgrade in the link. That way all you need to do is find a wire that is powered when you want to have the lights on and use that to power the relay. If the lights you're looking at don't draw more than 10 amps (combined), then you'd likely be okay without a relay, and use the stock wiring.

If you add lights, I would definitely add a dedicated switch. You can slave the switch off of the headlights so they can only turn on when the headlights are on - that sort of thing...
