I have a thunk when I take off from a stop

It happened on 2nd and 3rd gen 4wd's but not on new 2wd. It may be slack in the drive train ( transfer case, etc.)

 

Do a drain and fill of the trans fluid

this should be step 1 of any third gen, especially a used one. It’ll likely take care of the issue. It’s an easy job to do yourself and I’ve had it fix numerous trucks with this same issue.

If the issue persists you’ve done this, then proceed with other suggestions in this thread

But according to tacomaworld and local toyota dealership, its normal. Planned obsolescence working as intended.

A fluid check was at the top of my list.

 

Had this problem on my 2013. The issue was the slip yoke near the rear of the driveshaft/ rear diff was underlubercated from the factory. Toyota replaced my rear driveshaft for free.

 

I should have included that there is no sound when this happens which, leads me to believe it could be low fluid in the tranny. Thing that concerns me with that is how much damage has been done if any.

 

Lots of lesser things to check and eliminate before doing a transmission drain. You can check the brakes by having it up and rotating the wheels. You should feel a hung brake. Check the carrier bearing while it's up. This is my bet. That's the bearing wrapped in a donut around the driveshaft. It should zero movement other than rotational. Then check u joints. Lastly check the yokes at the end of the drive shaft. Try to slide them front to back. If they move and have a slight thump this is your culprit. It means the grease has washed out from between them. Trucks driven in flood water will have this problem. Just get them repacked. Lots of other issues that could thump. But most of them will do it at random or in deceleration also. These are the hot list ones for think at takeoff.

It’s the driveshaft spline. The thing with the boot over it by the gas tank. I bet it’s rusted and there’s water inside. Need to pull the driveshaft and clean and grease the spline. This will get rid of your thud. It slides when the axle moves forwards and backwards. My boot was torn and rusted the whole spline causing exactly what you are having.

Pull it out and grease it liberally. Pack it full of grease. Kinda a pain in the ass but worth it.

 

One of my best friends has a couple tractor trailers so grease won't be a problem
