Starter issues began a few months ago when my truck randomly wouldn’t start, rapidly clicking, and only starting when jumped. Then randomly it was fine again. I replaced the contacts inside the starter thinking my problem would be solved but it continued to give me trouble not starting but this time jumping it wouldn’t work either, and it would only click once. It randomly decided to start again so today I replaced the battery thinking that was the issue but again wouldn’t start.
Just one loud click and nothing.
I tried banging on the starter, checked the starter relay, and wiggled the wires connected to the starter. Again randomly decided to start.

Either the starter is bad, although it still works sometimes? Or there’s a problems somewhere in the wiring between the starter and the battery.

    Thoughts?

    Cheers

Thought, you jumped it with no luck, eliminates wiring. Change the starter.

We have a No crank condition.

When your key is turned to start you hear one click then nothing ?

    Auto or manual ??

When you say you jumped the truck added another power source via cables??

Maybe at the starter energized the solenoid from the battery cable connection and no cranking ??

As it starts at random times I would look at battery terminals and the ground connections.

In any case time to break out the meter

Yes, one single distinct crank on a manual.
I have jumped It with a battery pack and another car. That worked for a bit until it didnt.

The one disticnt click sounds like the starter solenoid is closing but there isnt enough amperage for the starter motor to turn... it could be the starter motor itself, the wiring from the battery to the starter or battery connections both positive and negative. If the battery cables show corrosion they need to be replaced.
