If I leave my truck sit for a couple days the shifter is very difficult to move into any gear and sometimes I can't get it into D, and the console light does't show the gear until I wiggle it. It feels like something it just really gummed up and not smooth acting like when it was new. Any known problems with other 05's where this is happening? Once I get it moving it isn't bad but still not as smooth as it used o be. I only have 60K on the truck, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks for the help.

Most likely thing is a corroded up neutral safety switch on the right side of the transmission. Hose it down with your favorite penetrating oil. If that frees it up, you need a new one.

Is there a written procedure to follow for replacing the NSS? Do you have the P/N for a new one? Just planning ahead for my next project. Thanks allot.

    1. unplug electrical connector.
    2. Pry the lock fingers back away from the lock nut corroded over the shaft and loosen nut.
    3. remove the switch retaining bolt
    4. remove old switch
    5. install new switch reverse order
Note you may have to loosen the bolt in #3 and adjust/align the switch so that when shifter is in neutral the shaft (longer sides) are aligned with the vertical line on the switch housing (between electrical connector and bolt) and then tighten the retainer bolt.

Is it best to stick with OEM or go aftermarket? Do you know the P/N if I go with Toyota? Thanks

You shouldn't unless you strip or break one.

OP ... I have a 2005 with only 50,000 miles and have experienced the same thing as you. What I found is that is that I normally park on the right side of my driveway and it has a reasonable decline. People here who are far smarter than me might have a better explanation but I found that once I back out of the driveway, level out and drive for 10 minutes everything is back to smooth. Probably not the same problem that you have but it might be worth parking on a level surface and seeing if you still have the problem. As soon as I started parking on the street the problem disappeared. If that makes sense.

Yes it doesn't work any longer as they killed the web site that hosted the old files... :(

Apologies for going off topic, but you have 60k and another one above mentions 50k miles for a 2005. My 2005 has 160k miles and I thought that was low :) Awesome I hope the NSS fixes your issue.

Ha! I got lucky when I bought mine used a few years ago. It was purchased by a guy out on Long Island who only drove it to the beach and back when he was surfing so it had super low miles. I only drive on the weekends so my mileage is really low. And -- 160K is low! :).

Sad thing is I am looking to sell because it is an AC (which I like) and with my growing kid and soon to be two dogs (plus wife) it is getting pretty cramped.

I am following this thread in case I have this problem. How is yours holding up?

i'll be actively looking for a 2nd gen AC in 2 years for my kids so i'll archive this and check back -- maybe you'll still have it. Ha. Mine's great. Trouble free and I like the fact that I can tinker with it, learn, and be comfortable that I have this great resource when I screw up.
