Might want to inspect closer for mouse droppings. I suspect most of that is from mice.

Man, where do people live to have their air filters that dirty? I change mine once a year and it’s really just slightly dark due dust and dirt caught in it

Kansas city, MO. Just got back from Dallas as a matter of fact. While our cities are very similar as far as expansion and hospitality goes, apparently the ecology, critters, and foliage is a tad different.

Don't have to worry about a dirty cabin air filter if your truck doesn't use one

I got you all beat. A lady with a 1975ish VW bug walks up to me and hands me a valve head, and with a perfectly sincere voice asks, "Is this important?" "yeah, that's important. Where'd you get it?" "I was driving on the freeway and it made a popping sound and had a little less power. I drove it into the gas station and I found that on top of the motor."

I just had to look. It went through the top of the piston and out through the top of the case.

I can understand not being overly interested in vehicles. But to not even care about the very basics? ?? Like being able to pump your own gas. Check you oil level. Or how to put air in the only 4 contacts that you have on the road!!
Then these people complain about spending any money at all on something that's such a big initial investment!
When l was a kid, my dad told me that if you take care of the car, it'll take care of you and be reliable. If you ignore it, it'll be a lot less reliable and cost you a lot money in the long run.

Those words worked for me for 40 years!

This reminds me of when one of my female employees was pissed off that she didn't pass her inspection because her tires were bald already. She said if her husband were there they wouldn't have taken advantage of her :annoyed:

They need to bring back auto shop class to high schools, or at least make a class/learning segment about basic auto maintenance. It's mind numbing the people I know about my age (35) that don't know anything about maintenance, I work with a guy that seized his Scion's engine because he thought the red lantern oil pressure light was just an "need oil change soon" light. Many other stories like that as well.

I admit I knew very little myself until I got my truck and developed an interest in it a few years ago. I do almost everything to myself now. I don't think everyone should be THAT interested in vehicles, but at least understand how they work and what's required of you as an owner to keep it running well. Vehicles are one of the biggest investments most of us make and to treat them with next to no regard makes no sense to me.

edit - not saying that's what this thread is about...just went on a little rant there lol

We used to have a cat that would hop up on the hood of our minivan almost before it was stopped in the garage. She always slept up on the cowl/windshield wipers to soak up the heat coming off the engine.
I changed the cabin air filter a couple of years ago, and should have taken a picture of it. It was PACKED with cat hair. I kicked myself for that one.
I'm good about all of the other maintenance but overlooked that one a little too long.

are you implying an aftermarket filter would have failed to catch those small particles shown?
