i teach English now, the Lieutenant in question was a cadet where I taught ROTC

everywhere I go people complain about the current crop of young people. in ROTC I saw none of that, the students I had were every bit as service-driven and mature and focused as I could hope a young officer would be.

    easily my best assignment.

I think most the complaints are with junior enlisted. Certainly not all, there are some amazing young soldiers and those are usually the ones that end up continuing to serve. The complaints would be the ones that do one enlistment and end up being the turds that expect a free ride. Those ones end up getting out or kicked out and talk about how horrible it and their leaders were.

As far as ROTC goes, our host school (Princeton) has three satellite schools (Rowan, The College of New Jersey, and Rider) and they were all top notch cadets. At least the ones that had received contracts to commission. You will always have a few turds in their freshman and sophomore years just trying the program out. If anyone bitches about ROTC officers it’s our own fault. We pick who gets a contract and thus commissions. The ones in my program, even the ones that my predecessor contracted, were great kids. As a senior NCO, (e8 at the time) it was a great assignment to go and get rejuvenated. Had that been my last assignment, it would’ve been the perfect ending.

i did have one cadet that greatly disappointed me. my only real story from that assignment

this idiot decided to try and shoplift a Nintendo game at a Black Friday sale.

i caught his booking mugshot on the website for the local jail. after the holiday we called him in for a come-to-jesus meeting

when he arrived he was surprised to find a full formation waiting for him, which he attempted to join, and was rebuffed.

and on signal from the command element (which included our battalion commander), we shrouded our guidon. we didn't case it, it was shrouded in a piece of black sackcloth. and it was disgusting to see.

he didn't get to plea a case. after being called to attention facing his peers, his uniform was stripped. the MS4 that removed his nametape made a point of throwing it in the trash before falling back in.

then the idiot was given an hour to return his gear or be billed for it, and told that we would all be waiting for him. he had all of it in his truck

when he dropped his gear off I simply told him the next time he tried to enter our building it was at his own risk, then I told him to leave my line of sight and never try to talk to me again.

then the commander asked the still-formed cadets if there were any questions. there weren't any. it was pretty well understood he was now persona non grata. I'd never seen the like

i saw him on campus one day, walking toward me, months later. when our eyes met, he stopped abruptly, looked around, and practically ran to get into a nearby building. never saw him again

he ruined that part of his life with a dumb decision over a kids video game

and that... was the only problem I had my entire tour there

very nice. Good example to the other cadets. My most disappointing one was a female cadet. Super motivated, great grades, showed up to all the extra stuff. Got a last minute contract after I had PCSd. The following summer she came up hot on her piss test at LDAC (warrior forge). Lost her contract and opportunity to commission. That one caught me by surprise and really disappointed me when I heard about it.

    On the topic of movies,

Bosnia...The movie Behind Enemy Lines pisses me right the fuck off. Based on a semi true scenario, except it wasn’t just a go fast jet crew and no one died. A shithook went down due to a mechanical problem, go figure, and the Navy Seahawks (no Hueys involved at all because they don’t do carrier duty) that went on the SAR call landed outside Vlasenica with a Navy/MC SF det to provide security on the recovery. This was a no shots fired in and out situation and the 4 crew members were sitting by the downed whirly bird eating MRE’s when they got there. Gotta love Hollywood.

Was on the TV when I got home and my wife loves the movie so I ruined it for her with accurate accounts.

pretty sure the movie was inspired by the Scott O'Grady rescue

That was a part of it too and I failed to mention in my post the Chinook was the original SAR bird for O’Grady. There was a lot to that story that was embellished on all sides that didn’t help the story at all.

It makes me sick. He probably has PTSD now. I went with my son to a joint recruiting office recently since he is graduating HS soon and is considering the military route. Anyway, I couldn't believe the coddling that goes on now. There were kids in there on the DEP getting ready to do their PT and because the heat here in Florida was too bad, they were going to PT in the air conditioned gym across the street.

Between med boards and chapters, I could never get below 12 waiting to leave. It was a 220 person company but still. Fucking pansies.

The movie is worth it for those of us missing Kodiak. Some good views of home in there.
