Potential Tacoma buyer: reliability issues with Gen 3 (2016+) models?

Bought a new 2017 Ram 1500 4x4 crew cab, love the truck, doing small functional mods, and enjoy 25+mpg combined gas mileage. Only problem is wife and I are thinking of moving nearer to grandkids, and at 19' long the truck won't fit/barely fit with no walkaround room in new garages.
First: what is length of a Tacoma long cab/long bed?
Second: any reliability issues with gen 3 Tacomas?

I have a 2017 TRD sport that just turned 141k miles!!!! It is still like new. All I have done is replaced front brake pads and change oil every 5k and use mobile 20k oil extended performance. This truck is built for a long life....

 

I think the DCLB is pretty close to the same length. 225” I think. It’s a little over a foot longer than the SB. About the same length as a suburban. It’s a limo.

 

Haven’t had a single issue since I bought new 1/16 36k and counting

 

The short bed is about 5.5' and the long bed is about 6.5'. These specs are all available online. Toyotas are pretty well known for reliability and I don't think there have been any major issues that have come up so far.

 

More than a few here store their dclb trucks in garages, reliability is as good as its ever been. There will always be a few lemons, but many many happy owners. Personally I have over 126k on my 2016, never had anything other than standard preventative maintenance done.

 

2016 with 40k plus miles. Zero issues

 

2016 with 125k miles, and a 2005 with 194k miles lol. Neither give me issues.

As for the length... you might want to consider a short bed. The DCLB is about the same length as a full size truck with a crew cab and 6-6.5ft bed. You’ll just have to do some measuring to be sure

you have the highest mileage 3.5 that I’ve seen on here.

Saw one for sale with 240k though, it was a fleet truck in Texas. Ill definitely be buying a 2020 once I decide to get rid of this one

Test drive it. If you buy it take the critical comments on here with "a grain of salt" or delete your account here lol, I've noticed a lot of people like to complain on here about various "issues" with the truck. Sure some out there will have legit problems, but for the most part they are a pretty well proven reliable rig with low cost of ownership and excellent resale. When driving the 3rd gen they don't make a lot of power in the low RPM range, and they are programmed to try to stay in the low RPM range for fuel efficiency. Step on the skinny peddle and let the motor wind up and they will get it done. I was happy to see that engine in it honestly. We have the same motor in a newer sienna minivan and that thing blew my mind the first couple times passing on the interstate, its like a minivan / rocket

 

I had a 2011 sold because I had to cross the city several times a day, switch bu WRX... that was good, but after some years , I have bought a 2019, during there years I have owned two wranglers , and been on the forums of the Wrx, and the jeeps , high porcentage of the topics are related with failures , as you can see on this, most of them are related with mods, or even discussion about the favorite colors ... conclusion the reliability is one of the characteristic of the Tacoma

 

Though I have low mileage on my truck no problems and love it. I have had two other Taco's over the years and no problems with them.

 

67k on my 2016, no problems as of yet.

 

I'm just super impressed with 25 mpg on your truck. that's pretty awesome I don't think the guys here get that on the V6s

 

For real, I get 21.

 

Google says the 2020 Tacoma models are between 212" and and 226", which means the Long Bed is probably a hair under 19 feet long.

Reliability-wise, I've had my 2016 since November of 2015. It's got about 50k miles on it. I've had some warranty work due to known issues with the truck (replaced console/multimeter, front needle bearing, etc.). Nothing that would have ever left me on the side of the road. Probably the most reliable of the last three new vehicles I bought (Early 2000s Jetta, 2007 Frontier).

 

125 and 141. Good Maintenance. That's awesome.
