15712536693101082303205150488307.jpgDoes it come off? Can I buy it new without the actual shifter assembly? Is a junkyard my best/only option?

I should have searched for "knob"! For those prices I guess it's the junkyard. Thanks!

The buttons work and look in good shape. The handle/knob is pretty old looking and discolored. Wonder what it would look like plastidipped?

Tuff stuff is what I use on junkyard interior parts. Like brake clean for the interior.

Just be careful with what cleaner you use. Some will clean them good and leave them tacky making them get even dirtier than before.

A little Dawn, a toothbrush and a towel will clean it up. And it’s safe for your skin.

Jammer, I really appreciate you finding that. It's just what I was looking for! I'm going to try to clean up the one I have for now. I'll keep the sale offers in mind if it doesn't turn out to my satisfaction.

when you take it off you can either soak it in or just use some dishwashing liquid in warm water. seems to work the best. if it's really bad maybe some grease cutter.

but do not use anything that harms plastic or rubber.

Last year I changed interiors between my now-sold 2001 and my keeper 2003 Tacomas, putting the better condition/color interior from the old truck into the new one. So I got to take apart and put back together that shift lever twice.

It's not hard to take off -- there are two setscrews on the front of the handle toward the dash and then it lifts off. But the OD switch is tricky. It comes out with gentle prying, and it goes back together with great frustration to get the pieces together and aligned with a spring that wants to send them all elsewhere.

You can probably clean the lever in place and get surprisingly good results -- it really does clean up quite well. I'd do that any time over changing the lever.

If you dont want to keep cleaning it you may look into swapping the shifter(s) with black from a 96-02 4runner. Both the 4 wheel drive shifter and main shifter swap over easy.

    That's what I did :D

also breaks up the grey monotony around the shifter. I changed the 4wd button and boot as well.

I found the set from a junk yard 4runner with a flawless black boot. Still debating if I want to swap it over. I agree it breaks up all the grey.
