So I have a 500-mile 2019 DCSB TRDOR. I have rear diff resonance audible between 50-60 mph with light throttle, only with the radio off. Stumbled across this thread while just browsing while bored.

I have had several cars that had a differential resonance around this speed range, including:
    2004 Subaru WRX
    2006 Subaru WRX STi
    2003 BMW 330i ZHP
2004 BMW 330i ZHP (track build) (current)
    2008 BMW 135i M-Sport
    1995 BMW M3 (current)

In my experience anything with a stiff suspension and/or stiff bushings and a rear differential will make some audible whine. It doesn't mean that the differential is failing. I really wouldn't worry about it too much in most cases, the exception being when it's audible above the radio.

I know it's anecdotal evidence, but I hope that it helps to put some minds at ease.

Thanks bro. I think that my mind is at easy now. I must say that my dealership did do their due diligence in investigating this issue. Apparently the directive by Toyota TAS (Toyota Administrative System) is that my VIN does not fall within this range, since the components from the TSB were already applied to my truck from factory. They even provided me with all the documents that they have if I want to make a case with Toyota Corporate. The tech tightened up the bolts in the diff and from my initial drive, I didn't hear the whine that much. Being an engineer, and researching a lot about this issue, I am dead on sure it's resonance, and therefore not an issue. By the time I throw on a roof rack, Borla S-type exhaust, lift, bigger wheels and tires, I wont hear any whine lol.

So are we to assume they added the changes to the production line after the affected VIN ranges listed on the TSB?

That's what it seems like. The report said my truck already has the components of the tsb installed.

For those who have had the TSB 0013-18 completed, what are your thoughts on the results? I had it done last week and while the rear cab mounts are now silent, I hear some gear whine transmitting from the front mounts. I don't understand why they installed dampers on just the rear mounts? Not nearly as bad coming from the front mounts but I am thinking of buying the TSB parts and doing the front mounts myself. Should take all of 5 minutes.

It definitely eliminated the noise I was hearing from the back of the truck. Let me know if the dampers help with the noise from the front. I personally don't notice anything from the front of my truck. But seeing as I'm on some 33" Goodyear Duratracs, all I hear now is tire noise haha.

Anyone have success taking a 2019 in for this TSB? I just rolled over 1,100 miles and am starting to hear this whine. Not too terribly worried as it seems to definitively be NVH, but would still like to have the TSB addressed if possible. Any info would be great, thanks!

I have had the TSB performed which cut the noise down considerably. Now back worse than ever. Service Manger agrees it pretty loud. Previously he had replaced a differential in one truck three times. All had the same noise. Today we drove two brand new 2019’s and both have the whine. If you open the rear slider you can hear it which leads us to think it’s the ring and pinion set up. I have opened a case up with Toyota and will continue to press them for a fix. I believe the have three chances to fix the issue before I can go to arbitration.

Took my 2019 in to address the whine from the differential. The technician first tried to tell me it was the stock tires, then after calling him out on it he then said my backflip bed cover is causing the sound to amplify in the cab. Fun part about that is I pulled over, opened it, and still reproduce the sound just as loud (ass hole). Next he tried throwing the truck in neutral at 58mph while the rear ending was singing, which made no difference in sound, and told me because its in neutral no load is on the diff so the sound is not coming from it??? What he didn’t know is I’ve beed through is before on a 2017. They replace the diff and the sound was 80% better.

after all this I had a forceful conversation with the service manager which led to a call back informing they are replacing the differential. I know its a harmonic sound that may or may not have an affect on the lifespan, but its annoying as hell. How Toyota has not addressed this over the past 4 years, I don't know. I do love the truck, but if theres a chance to reduce or alleviate the noise my OCD wont let me leave it alone.

According to the technician, the past TSB parts are already on the 2019s.

How I fixed the rear end noise and the transmission shifting issues that kill the drivable of the Tacoma. Traded it off. Problems solved.

This whole problem is easily solved with a set of duratracs.

I had the noise and was lucky to have the TSB performed when the truck was under warranty. The noise was suppressed about 50% but came back after about 6 monhts. I had read a rear sway bar eliminates the noise; a theory which i believed. Stiffening rotating assemblies raises the resonant frequency, and adding mass lowers it. I installed the Hellwig rear sway bar and the noise has again gone down by about 50% again, but it is still there albeit at a slightly faster speed.

At slow speeds my leaf springs sound like an old farm tractor.

    What a pile.

I just got back from my local Toyota dealership for a drop off appointment, and ended up driving my truck back home. 3 weeks ago I had brought it in for the rear noise and they were able to recreate the noise (obviously, who could miss it) and were "working with the engineer and ordering parts" I walk in today for them to tell me they won't perform the TSB because they don't believe it will fix the issue. Guess I'll put up with it untill I go up in tires and replace the gears myself.:bananadead:

After I added sliders, backrack, Retrax cover then sprayed my leaf springs with ACF-50 then packed the leafs with Fluid Film,

My howl went down to the point that I have to listen for it, and know it's there, before I can hear it.

When I start to notice it again, I spray my rear leafs with ACF-50 and or Fluid Film.

Doubt greasing the leafs will work for everyone,
But at least your leafs won't squeak and rust, if you give this a shot.
Btw Oil spraying (ACF-50) my whole truck made it ride a lot smoother and quieter, I wasn't expecting a noticeable difference.

There is no doubt that in my case it was just a harmonic frequency; diff->housing->leafs->frame->cab

I will give the ACF-50 a shot. I live near the ocean, wouldn’t be a bad thing to have a coat of that stuff. You cover entire leaf spring or just around the axle?

It's just the leaf springs that transfer the noise to the frame.

    Near the Ocean?

lol ACF-50 and fluid film should become your new friends if you still want to have a frame in 10 years :)

Much appreciate the information. Its a great truck, I just need to get rid of the whine or mask it some way. I don’t listen to music much driving which is a big part of the problem. I like the sound of the road so a intermittent harmonic whine is like nails on a chock board to me.

There's nothing you can do officially through Toyota to fix the problem as they deem the noise normal/characteristic of the vehicle. Our 2019s already have the revised cab mount TSB installed from the factory.

Some people have reported mixed results by applying dynamat behind the rear seats on the back of the cab wall, as well as placing some medium density porous foam over the rear cab vents.
