Long lasting muffler in salt country

Hi all, upstate NY resident where they salt the heck out of the roads.

My 09 rclb still had the original exhaust, in good shape, except the muffler has a hole now. Was wondering if anyone could recommend a stainless, or coated muffler that would last longer then the OEM or Walker branded mufflers.

 

I would say ten years with salted roads is pretty darn good. Maybe some up north guys have some suggestions.

 

In my experience, there's not much you can get that will beat the OEM part. "Aluminized" , Galvanized, etc just won't last as long, especially where salt is concerned. Best you can do is all Stainless... but that won't be cheap.

Go OEM or your clamping in a new muff every 3 years

 

My 06 muffler is still muffling along. I'd say oem take off to save a few bucks.. Although most take offs seem to be for 4.0

problem is it sounds like a performance exhaust.

 

It comes for long bed. You must cut it down for short bed.

 

You might have to add a resonator to that.

I highly doubt you'll find anything better engineered and longer lasting than OEM.

 

Same boat. My pipe is all decent yet. 14 years of Pa roads ate my muffler. I cut it out and clamped a stainless Dynomax in.

 

Not sure if a change in sound is an issue but, I’ve had Magnaflows on two different cars in Jersey and they always looked great. The 304 stainless will weld up fine to the stock 409.

I have had this on my truck for a little over a year. It is loud under load at low rpm. It does fit perfectly and bolted right up using the stock hangers.

 

This is what I thought too. During the last sale, I was able to get the TRD exhaust for 37% off. Currently its 21% off - PTR3135131 (2013 - 2015 version) Putting it on tomorrow!

 

My muffler lasted 12 years before it got a hole in it. I've never had an aftermarket last that long. A new OEM cost me under $500. with new hardware, and took about an hour to install.
Put the passenger side up on ramps and it comes out pretty easy.

 

I have to agree with the others, OEM or TRD. I haven't seen many aftermarket exhausts last more than 3-5yrs in my area (Iowa) with salt and the liquid salt/brine mix.

if your stock pipe is still in decent shape I would have this muffler installed. It’s the same stainless muffler that comes in the their cat back system. I have the cat back and it sounds very good, close to stock but deeper.

 

Stainless all the way, on past cars whenever I have to replace the exhaust I just upgrade to something stainless. My first car, 1992 nissan sentra, went through 2 regular exhaust systems over the 5 years I owned it. I also enjoy a little extra noise coming from the engine if done right, I've always just done Borla catbacks.
