I have a 06 TJ 4.0 6 cylinder 6 speed manual that I bought new. It has 110,000 miles on it and nothing has neen done except for the usaul maintenance items. I drive it just as much as I drive my tacoma. Every make and model will have their issues but as long as you enjoy driving it, go for it.

After doing a bit more research, I'll stay with the Tacoma. I can't honestly justify trading. Sure, they have a "heritage" feeling with the classic look, have a solid front axle, and better approach/departure angles, but the Toyota has more power, can tow a lot more, can haul stuff in the bed, is a bit more reliable, has electric goodies/comforts, better gas mileage even with 33's, and a locking diff (I still can't believe the jeep doesn't have a locking diff wtf). I'd say the Tacoma is a better daily driver and a more practical vehicle for a kid my age.

Thanks for all the input and sorry for even considering such a betrayal :smack:

    Workin' on it....
I've said this before in another thread similar to this one. Before I purchased the taco I test drove a jeep just to see what all the hype was about. It was cramped, the interior fit and finish was sloppy and no AC!!!! As a general do it all vehicle that is great doing trails but comfortable enough to take on a cross country road trip, there are few other vehicles that have the complete package that the taco has -- and reliability to boot.

I think you made a smart choice sticking with the 'yota

I had a 2011 JK. We had a lot of fun off the pavement. But it was the worst daily driver ever! It was like being stuck in a bad relationship. I sold that bitch and bought the Tacoma and haven't regretted it since.

I had a 1998 TJ 4cyl auto back in the early 2000s. Great vehicle and saved my life in a horrific accident. It was uncomfortable as can be and I was glad to get rid of it. Even though I’ll always secretly miss it at the same time. I would get a 6cyl Man. If I were to do it again.

He loves taking rides in the LJ. He has so much more room haha.
It took me two years to finally make the decision and I couldn’t be happier. :)

I have a '97 SE, 4cyl manual trans, no a/c, no ABS, no top. As it should be. Great toy for playing around with, but not a great DD. Reliability depends on diligent maintenance. Now that I have a Frontier P4X instead of my Tacoma, reliability has improved to the point where all my efforts go into the TJ.

I have an '11 TRD OR and a built '04 TJ Unlimited (LJ). They are very different vehicles and I personally wouldn't trade one for the other. You should be able get into an '04 to '06 TJ for little enough money that there is no need to trade off the Tacoma. Fair warning though, the entry price for a Jeep is the cheap sucker money part. The build possibilities are nearly be endless.

For young guys, I heartily recommend a Jeep or even a Scout. I have owned two Scouts and learned to drive with a '54 Jeep. It was a great experience learning how to work on vehicles. Nearly forgot all of it when I got a Toyota.

I’ve had a TJ for 15 years (in-line 6, 5 speed). Definitely not a DD. It’s not safe, it will buck like a horse, the brakes suck and it’s easy to lose control in any type of emergency maneuver. But it is so spartan and bare bones, it is a nice reprieve from the electronic wizardry of today. I love mine but it is rough. you really really need to test drive one before you commit— it is an acquired taste and not for everyone.

I came from a 2002 TJ. It had the 4.0/NV3550/D44. It had 215K on it when I got rear ended at a stop light. Never had many problems(I did leave it relatively stock). I have nothing bad to say about TJ's......now JK's and newer ones :anonymous:.

Sold my 1st Gen last week. It was time. Yeah, need to update my profile...
Anyway, Looking at an '06 LJ Rubicon Monday. Started on CJ's and after reading for a while I realized the TJ/LJ is a better fit for me.
