If you don't get bigger tires you won't need regear, hell even stock feels fine with my 32's but they are only 47 pounds.

Get the tacoma and try the tsb update first, that alone was a very positive and noticeable change, and if you feel you need more, then OVTUNE 2.0 will be everything you will ever need.

Would like to update my post after installing the OVtune and running around for a few days. This is complete game changer. This tune pretty much solves all of the issues I had with the engine/transmission combo on my 2017 Tacoma. I even had TSB-0062-18 done a while ago which did help a little but nothing close to what the tune does. I am running the 1.05 91 performance tune and the truck just wants to go now. Definitely some improvements in low and mid-range torque and the truck just builds revs faster AND sounds better doing it. Also makes 5th and 6th gear much more useful on the highway. I have a 15 mile commute each day on the interstate and the truck was holding 1900RPM at 82 MPH with a slight head-wind this morning. Can't really give a good gas mileage reading for you as I have been dipping into that throttle early and often. I think I will see a slight increase in MPG on highway driving because the truck was constantly dropping into 4th gear to maintain 80 MPH on the highway. If you get a 3rd gen, get the tune.

Have you actually shopped for a low miles, clean, 2nd gen? In the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and pretty much the entire state, they just don’t popup. People keep them.

The ones that do run 25-33k. Mostly listing for around $30k with less than 30k miles.

I had to go out of state for mine.

I've found the 3rd gen's many issues to be quite overblown. Mine gets out of its own way quickly and offers pretty good muscle for a vehicle its size. It's no drag strip terror, but it moves along just fine. I think some people go into it expecting half-ton truck torque from a small truck. The F150s I drive for work definitely have more torque, but they also have bigger engines and are built with towing and hauling lots of weight in mind. And they're generally enormous compared to the Tacoma.

I'll be towing an old Mustang this weekend, so I'll report back on how the Taco pulls.

That's why I ended up with an '18. The only used 2nd Gen off-roads that I could find were iffy.

I prefer the v6 in my 18 over my 13, it driver's better everywhere except from off the line. I do have complaints with the transmission tho.

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve driven so many Tundras and Tacomas, I like things about each one, but in the end I went with a new Tacoma. Bought it today and used the USAA car buying service, truly no hassle car buying experience. I got a great price, and got KBB max for my trade. It’s a new ‘19 Access cab TRD Off Road in quicksand.

I drove two low mileage 2nd gen Tacomas one 2014 and one 15. First one was a double cab, nice enough truck but the car fax on it worried me, kind of helped with the decision to buy new. Second was a very nice access cab, ran great, drove great, but it was a very basic truck, didn’t even have cruise control. It was also very expensive. I drove a couple of Tundras, super nice trucks but just not what I want. So I drove about a half dozen 3rd gens, both new and used. I took a 40 mile test drive in the one I bought. I was able to drive on the interstate, city streets and some stop and go. I tried out the ECT Power button, and the sport mode shifting. Probably the only time I’ll have in D is on a long highway trip. For everything else I’ll use ECT PWR mode and sport shifting. When I brought it home I had a lot of twisty roads and a few steep roads. It was a dog in D, but in S4 or S5 I was perfectly happy with it. No, I doesn’t have V8 power, but it does fine.

I need some advice. My little 5 foot tall wife needs some step bars, and if I’m honest, I need them too. There are dozens of different ones on Amazon, very confusing. I want some that are big enough to be useful, but tuck up under the side of the truck like sliders. I like the looks of the Tyger brand, does anyone have those on their Taco?

I’ll get some pics up soon.
