Okay, what’s the point of this thread? A woman blows past a stopped bus on a state road in Indiana and kills three kids and probably cripples a fourth. She hit them with her Tacoma. Brutal shit, people.

 

Shepherd was found guilty Friday of three felony counts of reckless homicide.

 

Jesus, what a terrible situation. Yet another reminder to PAY ATTENTION TO THE ROAD.

 

Yeah, I saw that part too. But the first few responses were shitposts with MMC fighter gifs or something, so I’m not sure what we’re doing here. Are we armchair adjudicating? Is it a reminder to watch what you are doing when you come up along a bus? Maybe a general TW safety thread might be a nice idea, but this one’s already a mess.

 

This happened about 25 miles north of where I live. It's a terrible thing and not nearly as simple as it would seem. The blame lies at a lot of peoples feet, although assessing blame won't bring any of those kids back.

1. Having small children cross a highway in the dark to get on a schoolbus is beyond retarded. Multiple complaints from parents were ignored about having their kids cross the highway were dismissed.

2. The bus driver admitted to looking at the oldest of the 4 kids and motioned for her to hurry up and cross the road. The kid responded to being told to do something by an adult.

3. The young woman driving said she was disoriented by a semi behind the bus, she says she didn't process the visual image as a schoolbus.

I've driven past that trailer park many times, it's on a curve so your head lights don't illuminate directly in front of you until you complete the sweeping turn and that's exactly where the trailer park is. The whole damn thing sucks, 3 kids dead, another horribly injured, a young mom going to jail.

I don't know any of the people involved so don't have a "side" it just seems like everyone that could have done something to prevent this didn't give a shit about the kids crossing a busy highway even with many complaints from parents about how dangerous it was until 3 kids died.

The school bus pulls off the highway into the trailer park now to pick up kids.

WTF?! Sounds like that was a disaster just waiting to happen and yet nobody saw it coming? That’s terrible. You’d think they would’ve been doing that from the beginning.

could have been avoided if someone just listened to the parents. Bus driver could have realized it as well and said something

This is old news...

 

Around here school buses have large flashing red lights when it is stopped with a huge illuminated sign across the front and rear of the bus that says something like “STOP WHEN RED LIGHTS FLASH”. It also has a full size illuminated stop sign that swings into the opposite lane. Can’t miss it as a stopped school bus.

Here as well, I thought that was a standard nationwide, and if it isn't, it should be. It amazes me how many folks just ignore school busses. Jefferson County, KY (Louisville) has bus accidents/incidents damn near every day.

Crash was long time ago. The story is about the conviction not the accident.
