Hi guys. Long story short today wife was driving my taco and she thought that engine sounds weird with some grinding noise. She immediately stopped and checked oil level and it looked like its low. I told her to get 3 qts of oil and add.

When I got home I let the truck sit, took the dipping stick, sanded it a little bit. Measured again. It appears that I didn't have oil problem, it was just thin oil all over the place after engine running.

Long story short: I now have about 3/4" higher level than top mark. What do I do? Let it be for another 3000 miles until next service at 40k, or change oil ASAP?

    Thank you.

Edit: changing it tomorrow or after tomorrow. Thank you guys.

I'd definitely drain it out and replace, wouldn't bother with the filter until the next scheduled change. Oil is cheap.

If she truly added 3 qts, do a full oil change. Not going to be a good idea to try and measure 3 qts coming out and then putting drain bolt back in or something like that. Defintely do NOT drive another 3000 with an extra 3 qts in the engine.

As the others have stated drain the oil and add new oil. That's way too much oil in there

Drain it, install Fumoto valve. With the valve you can easily drain oil without draining it all.

That sound she heard was probably the sound of your main bearings grinding on the crank due to oil starvation.

    I would total the truck.

How would there be oil starvation if after adding 3 quarts it is now over the top? And wouldn't there be some error light if oil gets too low?

Drain oil and refill. Want to make sure you get any air bubblels and foam out of there

Another wife story...why 3 quarts? It takes about 1.6 between low and full.

honestly was my suggestion. I was 1 minute into important meeting at work, wife called with very concerned voice saying engine makes weird noise and oil is very low. Attaches picture with oil just touching the tip of the stick. I know full oil fill is 6.2 qts. So tell her to get 3 in.

Message was simple: there is no oil in the system. And no time for troubleshooting.

Seems like an easy solution. Drain it all out into a clean pan, measure 6 Qts and put that back in. (there’s still some oil in the filter) That’s what my caveman brain is telling me.

Logical even if not correct assumption, easy for some to second guess, when they aren't facing the situation.

I’ve been in a similar sit. The marine industry pumps oil out when it’s time for an oil change. I just pumped 2 quarts back out with an easily accessible oil pump.
