Are you sure its cat 5 and not CAT 6? I looks like the cable is cat 6 (but its early and my eyesite sucks lol). CAT 5 is pretty old so be surprised if a new home had used it. Cat 5e would be what i would have expected to see if not CAT 6

Without knowing the layout of your house or anything....

For wifi if you think you'll need two wifi bases to cover the house, I'd look into one of the "mesh" setups. I use the ASUS AiMesh route which lets you just use two regular wifi routers. Nice thing is you plug the "in" cable into and have the wifi and also the 4 ports to hardwire things to as well. but theres tons of options for the "mesh" type setup from tons of companies so just look for one that fills your needs.

New home so probably CAT-6. I’m not THAT tech savvy so ya...hahaha I’m just thankful it has something because not having it was annoying in our last house.

Only need them in one location, living room for XBOX, TV, and a few other random things.

A switch is perfect for that scenario, easy setup and no maintenance (unless it fails) with minimal footprint.
Your house is wired with Cat 6, I zoomed in and read the sheathing so you should be good for at least 1GB/s data transfer.

Well I've never tried to fix rot in a door frame before and I was terrified to do this. But our lovely cat decides to scratch out half the rot for me this morning while I was spraying home defense but spray stuff inside. Since I didn't have a choice I just rolled with it after obscenities were said. Luckily the wood behind the rot wasn't rotten too otherwise I would have been in bigger trouble. I guess hardware stores don't sell the slotted frame piece that I needed so I had to use an old 2x4 and make up my own. Not near as bad as I thought, but more than I wanted to do on my only day off.

Would a secondary router act as a switch then? Would like WiFi downstairs for phone/laptop/thermostat/doorbell/camera/etc.

Possibly, that’s entirely dependent on the router, I have a netgear router that I use for my wireless that is hardwired to my ISP router and I cannot use it as a switch.

Looks like you used pine. Not a preferred wood around my neck of the woods for exterior use. Looks like you did a good job fixing it but next time add some oil base primer to the ends at the minimum to keep the wood lasting more than 3 years.

    Looks good :)
Did you use a table saw to mill it into shape ?
what caused the rot in the first place? Might be worth looking into lol

Yea that's all I had on hand and our selection here is almost all pine or cedar. I didn't want to Shell out for cedar on this haha it's treated pine if that makes you feel better!
Yea table saw did the milling. Our back porch just doesn't dry. Dew rolls off the roof in the morning and splashes up on the walls and the sun doesn't hit certain sections like the door so it just stays most. Previous owner "fixed" it with wood putty but didn't get all the rot so it just grew from there. The previous owner did some suspect things in this place.

@theredofshaw for your need of extra CAT6 connections in your living room, I have to agree with everyone that a small switch is your best option. I would go with an 8 port switch.
@95 taco correct me if I am wrong, but looking at the structured media panel, I see a patch panel for the CAT6 cabling. I believe that the OP is going to need a small switch to go between the patch panel and the cable modem if the OP is wishing to activate all 5 of his CAT6 drops (unless cable modems are now coming with more than 4 RG45 connections).

Correct, I didn’t stop to count the drops on the patch panel.
I haven’t seen a router with more than 4 ports.

So I'm in MA right now on one of our current projects, kind of a pain in the ass job mostly because the owners want reclaimed oak but don't want it to have bug holes or checks or patches etc...

    But I digress.

Now I'm no engineer, but I do know that usually when a 16" double LVL is used as a joist there's probably some load on it. But apparently ductwork is more important?IMG_20191023_165951.jpg
$18 million home folks. Can't make this shit up lol.
