So just did an oil/filter change and have come to realize I drained the tranny and dumped 5qts oil in engine. Big time screw up.
Now what? How to refill tranny?
And of course, drain and refill engine oil with correct amount.
A huge DAH on my part. Help!!

Thanks. Looks like a self fix is beyond my skills. Time to call the dealer. Damn!

Bought it new but never changed out the oil myself till now. Trying to save $ while living on fixed income. Agreed, a head hanging moment for what use to be a fair "shade tree" mechanic.

Shit happens and at least you caught it before you drove off. Easy fix as others have posted! Think of it as a learning opportunity!

If you're not comfortable doing the transmission yourself, get the engine oil squared away. Then use the towing insurance on your regular insurance to have it towed to a transmission shop.

    back to bone stock.
yikes. after reading the first thread about it, i slid under my truck with a silver sharpie and labeled my tranny drain plug.

turned out the PO of my truck sprayed the oil pan red, for his reminder.

i once changed the oil on my MIL Infinity i30. i shit you not, the oil drain and tranny drain were very close together and looked similar. i got a gray hair on that one.

Sorry, OP, that really sucks. But you are not the first person to have done this, and certainly won't be the last. So don't beat yourself up too much.

If I were you, I'd at least drain all the engine oil out and re-fill with the proper 5.5 quarts.

Then I'd add 3 quarts of valvoline maxlife synthetic ATF to the tranny. That way the tech who starts your truck up and drives it on the lift won't mess anything up.

A NAPA I visit has a bottle of blinker fluid on the counter by the cash register. I always get a chuckle out of it.

I'm betting the dealer charges him $250 to fix this plus about $1,000 in recommended maintenance.

Shit happens, we all make mistakes, this exact thing has been discussed here for years, pick your head up and focus on gettin it fixed, remember the mistake, maybe mark the oil pan with a paint pen or something, and carry on.

As much as I despise the stealership, this might be your safe option to get the transmission refilled. Not sure I would trust towing it to any transmission shop that's not familiar with refilling the Tacoma's trans. OP, don't let this unfortunate mishap discourage you from attempting future DIY oil changes. It's one of the easiest maintenance item to perform on a V6 Tacoma.(If done properly)

Currently at stealership which is just around the corner from me ( a little bit of light here).
Est $160 + a $75 tow + $5 tow tip. So not so bad afterall although I could think of a hundred better things to do with those $s.
