I lost compression on cylinder 6. It had oil it did not overheat. 2 mechanics recommend that I replace the motor. Should I trust what they are saying? And not rebuild the motor?

    Sorry to head, Zandi.

When dealing with such big ticket items like this, I prefer the rule of 3...or 5 or whatever number (and mechanics) it takes for me to trust the info I’m being told.

Have they given you information on what test they performed to determine its a block/piston or head issue versus just a head gasket?

On this (relatively) modern and new of an engine, often replacement is economical to a rebuild, if the issue extends beyond a busted head gasket.

I had 2 shops tell me my truck's engine had a blown head gasket and/or a cracked head. A shop took apart the engine, said a head gasket was bad. I had them rebuild the heads, no cracks were found. They put the engine back together and I had them replace the water pump and timing belt (1st gen) at that time. They did the entire job and it had the same exact problem. It had cracked the engine block. $2,300 for the worthless top end rebuild plus $1,800 for a low mileage salvage yard engine including install. That's $4,100 basically for a used engine.

A compression test tells you there is a problem, but it doesn’t not tell you where the compression is being lost.

Read up on compression tests and leak down tests. There’s ways to test if it’s likely leaking from a valve (so a head problem) or the head gasket or if it’s likely a busted piston or piston ring.

What’s leaking will help you make a decision on what the fix might need to be. A shop that only says “well it’s got low compression so let’s replace it all” is a shop that’s not willing to go the extra steps to make sure that’s exactly what’s needed. Consult a better shop.

I agree with Jman. Leakdown test will help you pin point the problem.

if you can get the parts (re-build kit) and can remove the engine yourself, or for cheap.. a rebuild will be much better than a salvaged,,or remanufactured.
Rebuid you can use ""high quality" parts of your choice.
