We're getting out of our Jeep Grand Cherokee and getting a 4runner to go with my Taco. The 4runner is for the kids. There are a ton of 2016s flooding my market (Denver/Parker Colorado) but it looks like the 5th gen go back to 2009.

What are the break-points in the 5th gen (e.g. was there a 201X redesign)?
3rd row seating in the SR5 only?
Rarity of Sun Roof, leather, entertainment system (rear Video, haven't seen any)?
Things / years / models to avoid?

Last a very few models (only 3 on carmax nationwide) are listed with "rear AC" - is that dealer stupidity or is that a really rare feature (and what does it mean)?

In short whats the best 5th gen year make model to avoid spending 30k+ on a 2016?

Mechanically they haven’t changed. Get a 2010, a 2013, a 2019, they’re pretty much the same. The Limited has all time AWD and leather and all that. The SR5 and off road variants have similar 4x4. KDSS is great on the road and a lot of people love it but there are those who poo-poo it because you lose a little wheel travel. If it’s a DD get one with it. It doesn’t sound like you’re primarily rock crawling.

TL;DR - 2010 to present, get whatever you want, they’re all mechanically pretty much the same.

Any issues with going AWD? I'm a long time 4x4 guy, but this is more about getting to school in the snow- just want to make sure they don't have issues if I find something otherwise good with AWD.

5th gen started in 2010, facelifted in 2014. 2020 getting Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)

"Rear AC" is probably referring to the vents behind the center console. I'm not sure, but I think all models have it.

SR5/OR Premium models have SoftTex (fake leather) and sunroof. Limited has real leather and sunroof.

3rd row isn't a popular option, and probably the worst in its class.

Im pretty sure it’s just regular 4WD with the ability to have an open center diff so it doesn’t bind when driving. You’d be fine just getting a regular 4x4 and switching between 4 and 2 as needed by hand. The “all-time” 4WD is for those who want to leave it on always and not have to know when to shift in and out it 4WD.

If commuting in the snow is the primary concern get a Subaru. Their AWD system is superior on slick surfaces and you have your 4x4 Tacoma for when things get deep. Just an option. 4Runners are great, I love my 3rd Gen, but I’d take a Subaru on an icy highway every single day before switching between Rear Wheel Drive and 4x4 and constantly looking out for black ice..
