WANT LIGHTER WHEELS? SAVE 4.88 LBS PER WHEEL, HERE YOU GO.....

As part of our Tern Overlander camper buiId, (on a 2019 TRD Pro) a primary objective is lightness, on the part of the builder as well as myself. The camper will weigh ~ 500 lbs; the bed comes off for a savings of ~250 lbs, so net weight gain of only ~+250 lbs!

(Ok, I must be truthful, I also found titanium tire irons in Russia!) SO throw rotten tomatoes at me, I deserve it!

I had heard that the new 2020 TRD Pro wheels were some 4.18 pounds (see below) lighter each, which is huge, because my camper builder tells me that 1 pound off the tire/wheel combo is like taking 20 pounds off the bed, and it will make a big difference in performance; why else would Toyota go to all the effort of making the TRD Pro and only that model, have lighter wheels?

I have been trying for months to verify that the new 2020 TRD Pro wheel IS lighter, as "advertised" on the street, but have been unable to verify this information, find a part number, order one, etc. Finally, at Overland Expo a few weeks ago, some five Toyota engineers showed up and I was all over them to get help with this problem. Even they had to jump thru some hoops, but I finally have 5 new 2020 TRD Pro wheels on order. I just ordered them!

AND they each ARE 4.8 pounds lighter for 2020 versus 2019 and they will bolt right up!

Bingo......a total of 24 pounds (for 5 wheels) saved! Losing weight only happens a few ounces at a time.

You’ll need all the help you can get to help push that huge flat wind drag through the air and keep decent fuel economy and performance.

 

That’s cool info. Are you trying to stick with oem? Because FN has some wheels that are like 15.9 lbs each or something insane.

 

My Konig Countersteer Off Roads are like 18lbs each i think. Something like that. Might as well get Volks if you’re getting titanium parts from Russia..

 

Yes, OEM, 'cause then I can take it to any dealer and easily get it fixed and purchase parts. I've modified my FJ60 Land Cruiser and BMW airhead motorcycles, and almost invariably the parts most prone to failure are the "add-ons".

 

Wheels aren’t really a problem like that. If you manage break a non-OEM wheel any dealer can still sell you a perfectly workable OEM wheel in the same size to keep you going. .

 

Little surprised the camper isn't a little lower to the cab and maybe a little shorter. That being said, can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.

 

3rd Gen 4Runner 5 spoke wheels are 21.5 lbs, 4.5 backspacing, IIRC.

 

May I ask how much you paid for these TRD Pro wheels??

 

heck the 17” countersteer type x is 20.5 lbs. that’s still saving about a pound per wheel over the new TRD wheel, and you get a 17” and all the tire choices that come along with it. And I got these because I couldn’t justify (to myself) buying volks with the way I drive

 

They weigh 22.5 due to all the corrosion they accumulate.

 

How much do they run tho

 

I’m not sure, but iirc in the same ballpark as scs. Around 240 per wheel

 

These Volks are 16 lbs each according to the OP. And they are for sale at $1,400.

Ha, I remember when the Soviet Union fell there were all kinds of tools and military surplus made of Ti for sale. Pretty cheap. I bought a prybar for 50 (bout the same as steel here) but it got stolen quickly on the job.
