Every day I come home there are 2 doe and a yearling feeding on white oak acorns in the woods behind my house. I finally decided to hang a climber back there. Fuck it. I just want some meat. I get sick of driving to my club and not seeing shit. Gets really old really quick. We have had a dog problem this year too. Wish they didn't have collars. They'd be dead otherwise. Arrow fodder...

So yesterday starts like any other Saturday during archery season. Alarm goes off at 4:15am. Go down, make a cup of coffee, check the weather. As I'm sitting there drinking my coffee, my body is just begging for more sleep. It's like a relentless force. I know I'm gonna hate myself, but twenty minutes later I'm back in bed sleeping the sleep of the dead. Get up around 8:00am and it's gorgeous outside. Get a text from my one buddy, his dad dropped a nice buck. Fifteen minutes later he texts me, he shot one. *Sigh*... Shoulda got my ass out of bed and in a tree. So I plan on leaving at noon and being in a tree by 1:00pm.

12:30pm I'm parked at my favorite road to nowhere.

    Buck 1 2019.jpg

It's a little on the warm side and I take my time walking up the road. It's about 3/8 of a mile up the road, then off to the left, cross the little creek and up that hill. Cross the creek and getting up the embankment I slid back down, wedged my arm between two trees. Thankfully I stopped sliding or most likely I would have broke my arm in two places. This is not going well, not at all.

Continue the climb up the hill, then angle off to my stand. It's located at the edge of a draw that runs perpendicular to the road, and a little finger ridge running parallel. I learned a long time ago, hunt terrain and how deer use it, and everything else falls into place.

Something about fall colors against a cloudy sky. Picture doesn't do it justice.

    Buck 2 2019.jpg

Finally all is set, and I hear voices. Voices down on the road...What the hell.. Two guys talking loud, mentioning about putting a drive on. Really? No, really. Did I mention this day is not going well? After about a 1/2 hour they start up their ATV's and putt down the road. Mind you, this is a closed road. I sit there waiting for the drive to begin. By 3pm nothing is happening so I figure they weren't hunting.

Little finger ridge is off to the right of my bow.

    Buck 3 2019.jpg

Rest of the afternoon is quiet, except for a raccoon that is busy doing raccoon things. Around 5pm I hear movement that can only be deer. Not the rustle of squirrels, just a steady, almost imperceptible movement. I glance past my bow and see the brown shape of a deer. I can make out a rack, but not the points. I quick look thru my Vortex's and I can see he's a solid 6 point. His direction of travel will soon put him broadside. However he turns and now is a perfect quartering away shot. I need to get him to stop, "Maaaaah". He stops, bow is already at full draw, flo green pin tight behind his shoulder, and the arrow is gone. I don't see the impact, but do hear that solid thunk, like hitting a watermelon. He takes off, I can't tell how hard he's hit. Within seconds he's outta sight, but I still hear him crashing. Then nothing......and another crash. Wait ten minutes or so, get down, walk over to where I shot him. Arrow was a pass thru, blood soaked end to end.over to where I shot him. Sorry, no blood trail pics, started to lightly rain.

    Buck 4 2019.jpg

Follow the blood trail for about sixty, sixty-five yards. Decent blood, definitely lungs. He's side hilling, crossed two little gullys. Up ahead there is a rather deep gully, maybe 10 feet wide, six foot deep. As I followed the blood to the edge, I glanced down and saw.....

    Buck 6 2019.jpg

Yeah... I'm gonna need help on this one. Call my son, he's at his girlfriends, which is 8 miles from home, which is 13 miles from where we hunt. First thing he asked is where am I and do I need help. I most certainly do!! So I wait the 45 minutes till they get there. Takes a little effort to get the deer up and out of the gully, but we manage. Can't thank him enough for giving up a good part of a Saturday night to help out his old man.

    Great job, great story!
For over 25 years I've pretty much hunted with one buddy or another. Last year and this year I've been solo. Don't really mind the solo part, but when you know there is a buddy outside waiting for you it makes it a whole lot easier to get out of bed.
    Congrats on the deer!

Can’t believe my weekend .After losing the buck of a lifetime ,having my bow stolen out of my truck in my own driveway and now a so called friend who’s father owns 70 acres adjoining the 130 I have permission to hunt calls me and says I should have let him know that I shot the buck I couldn’t find  and they are mad because I posted ( for the owner ) the property I hunt . So these “friends” let me put my boat and dock in where they have access to the lake here the last 3 years and now I’m not allowed to put them in anymore . So this guy says he has pictures of the deer I shot . How the hell does he know it’s the same deer . These people must think they own the deer if they have a picture of it . Plus I called a guy with a tracking dog and the deer went no where near their property . Fucking people are assholes . The dog guy said my deer most likely survived if his dog couldn’t find it . Deer season makes people crazy . These guys are the type that go where they please but god forbid you go near their property. Why the hell should I have called them ......friggen big babies  Rant over:annoyed: people love to run their mouths around here . I asked one other neighbor permission to enter through his property with the tracking dog so I assume he ran his mouth to someone. And if I got a tracker dog to help it must be a giant buck . Phew ok now rant over :D

Sorry to hear that, but at least you know what they are really like. SO what if they got pics of the deer you shot...Crap you think they get crazy for deer...you should see ELK season here...last year almost got into a shootout. because these idiots pull up on the road with atv running expecting to see elk! We had sneaked down the fence line and got a good spot. And then one of the dumbasses says lets shoot over their heads!!!!!!! WHO the hell says that! Luckily they left but I drew my pistol just in case...

It’s true man ,people really are fucked up during deer season . It’s like a competition. Bunch of cry babies . I obviously know this guy that called me he is in his 30s and he is dumber than dirt and a big bull shitter . He has been in trouble for shooting deer out of his truck before .

Why would you get mad when your neighbor posts the property . This Guy cuts through there with his side by side all the time and I don't say anything to him or the owner .

Only things stopping me (for now), how big will he be next year, where's he gonna run off to when he gets shot, my girlfriend would be upset I shot one if my yard deer. On another note, I broke down and bought a HECS suit. Gonna put it on and see if it makes any difference with him. Another weird thing about him, he's always with a little doe. Always together. Used to be a third, a spike, not sure where he went. Makes me think the rut isn't here yet, yeah he's still young, but his hormones should be going nuts. All he cares about is food, loves my apple trees

Luckily, my wife encourages me to shoot one behind our house. I also went over and asked my neighbor how he felt about a deer possibly piling up in his back yard. His response: "I don't care what happens as long as you bring me some of the meat". DEAL! :infantry:

I figure I know exactly how close I can get to him, we know each other well enough and I know how he behaves, if the HECS does anything it's the perfect deer to try it on. Couple few beers, sure I'll buy the damn thing finally, plus I froze my ass off last few days, an extra base layer can only help.

I don't know my neighbors, it's mostly thick-ish timber, but directly behind me is an ex horse compound turned I don't even know. I'd like to think I could wrangle the little dude back. Or I'll just shoot him when he's in the fenced in garden
