Far stretch but I am desperate for some more torque after driving out to Moab from Denver. I am on 35’s (eventually 37’s) and at a 20% reduction in power at a mile high, I am considering the supercharged route but can’t help but think about the possibility of the battery power options.

Has anyone explored this? I’ve seen guys use forklift motors at the end of a transmission with a custom driveshaft that looked like a great concept. I’ve also heard of electric “superchargers” that add a belt to spin your crank instead of air induction... my budget would be around $7-8k for this. Anyone got ideas? I don’t mind giving up the bed space for batteries if it equals torque.

This is an old subject but we can open it for debate.

Electric superchargers can't sustain boost, and use so much power that the alternator draw to recharge the battery/capacitor would negate any gain.

They also struggle to produce any boost on any real world dyno.

Standard superchargers are parasitic, but overwhelm the problem with output.

I’m ok with a supercharger and that is the plan for now but I feel like there should be some electric bolt ons out there that can add some better numbers and if not, there will be.

7-8k you could supercharge it and regear the whole truck

Assuming you did 100% of the work yourself....yeah. Setting up gears properly isn't exactly a cakewalk though.

In any event, I do also think the traditional magnuson supercharger route is the best for you unless you want to take the truck FULL electric (which is something I'm constantly thinking about).

LS swap.... or super charge the 1gr.... any other options like electric supercharging bs is going to be pointless.

The amount of R&D to get it right would far surpass the 7-8K. What are your current gears? Also, if you live in denver you are already have some 20-30% loss in power. The supercharger and gears will be your best bet.

All of the currently available true electric turbochargers (not the BS computer fans they sell on eBay for $50) are incredibly expensive, are designed to only provide a few seconds of boost, and require a separate 48-volt electrical circuit to operate.

Last I heard, the next generation Land Cruiser will be a hybrid electric powertrain, backed by Toyota's massive R&D budget and 20+ years of developing their hybrid car technology. For us mortals, who still need reliability at the end of the day...

Magnuson supercharge it, LS swap it or start learning how to TIG weld to build a turbo manifold or two.

5.3L LS is the route id take if I was needing vastly more grunt.... more power, more torque, more mpgs without question.

Mainly need the top end for my highway driving. Would love a marlin crawler box but that isn’t where my pain point is currently.

Mercedes will be switching it's cars from 12V to 48V systems and electric turbo's.

Because Audi is also a German luxury brand, it has to compete with that. It too will go 48V + electric turbo.
This also powers other stuff. Electric steering rack, and so on.
A/C compressor might become electric instead of belt-driven.

The eventual goal is probably full electric vehicle, with no internal combustion engine.

It is probably harder to retrofit a new part to an old car,
versus a team of PhD engineers in Germany designing a new car from the groundup with a system in mind, at a high price point for the car

Currently regeared to 4.56 for my 35’s which has helped the hunting transmission but not really my power issue. 37’s are the goal but my coworker has supercharged his w/ 4.56 gears and it is pretty underwhelming which has caused me to try to find something else. I’ve never thought of an LS swap before but maybe that is where I should be going.

One more option that has helped my drivability, fuel economy and likely power is using HP Tuner and a @JustDSM engine map and @nd4spdbh tranny map. If you go LS swap, you can use the cable and software to tune your V8 someday, too. Best money I spent on the truck so far.

I do have the OVTune on it which made it run slightly smoother at high RPM’s but I didn’t really notice an increase.

I'm guessing you are an auto but 4.56 is a little small for 35s, seems 4.88 and a supercharger would be the most likely solution within your budget. Might even be able to recoup some of that but selling your current gears
