i have a 04 with a 3” lift and curious if anyone is running 285/75/16s on their stock rims. Hoping they will fit without any issues.

Lift isn't really going to affect what size tires you can run - at least not a suspension lift, which is likely what you're referring to above.

That's because lift only changes where the vehicle sits in relation to the suspension at rest - when you go over bumps and the suspension articulates, it has the same path whether it's lifted or not.

This article explains that concept pretty well, as well as several other things that will affect what you'll need to do to fit larger tires.

What size tires fit my lifted Tacoma?

Ultimately, to fit 33"s, you won't have to do too much if you're going to stick with your stock wheels and reasonably skinny tires - with 285/75, you'll likely just need pinch weld trimming and some hammering of the firewall.

You can see what I did here: Finally, the Pinch Weld Mod, for 255/85R16's

Feel free to ask if you've got questions.

I’m running 285/75/16 Goodyear Duratrac tires on my 2002 Tacoma. 3” suspension lift and stock upper control arms since 2014. No other modifications performed. Ive experienced no rubbing or other common issues. Overall I’ve loved the set up. It’s performed extremely well as a daily driver while never skipping a beat when taken off road.

The one exception where I have experienced some minor rubbing of the tire along the frame has only happened briefly while having the wheels turned all the way to one direction on really uneven terrain. However even that is a rare occurrence and only has happened while navigating through very tight spots on the trail.

Sorry for the excessive reply but thought I’d let you know my experience. There are a lot of informative posts and threads on here that folks have put a lot of time and effort into sharing that are definitely taking the time to scour over.

    Tons of people have.

Although "without issues" is in the eye of the beholder. As @turbodb said, if all you have is the type of lift that raises the ride height without altering the suspension geometry (i.e. with aftermarket control arms) the tires will still rub, maybe just not when you're driving down the road. If that's okay with you, go right ahead.

There are many many threads on the topic (even a whole sub forum - "wheels and tires"). You can do a search for that size tire and see what people have done in the past to get them to "fit". Be aware that tire BRAND also plays a role, as not all 285's are created equal, so search for size, brand, tread pattern, and that should get you going.

Well I had a set of Toyo open country ATll installed today, I’m really impressed with the new look and the stance it has. They don’t rub during normal driving but I can see they probably will while off-roading. So I’m gonna do the pinch weld mod this weekend.

I’ve noticed very minimal rubbing on the frame when steering is hard over. I’m thinking of installing spacers but I’m not real familiar with them. Going to read up on them tonight but feel free to chime in.

Plus in order to get that rubbing you have to have impact causing compression, plus a full tire turn so that’s super unlikely even if you’re desert running

Completed the pinch weld mod yesterday, turned out better than I expected. Have a little rubbing on frame when steering is hard over but I think spidertrack spacers will solve this.

Say goodbye to turning radius though

First photo shows clearance with the UCA.
Second shows minimal tire rub at hard over turning.
Third is the pinch weld mod that cured tire rub there. Still debating to put spacers (spidertrack 1.25”). Opinions welcome. Overall very impressed with pinch weld mod and the new look and performance so far of the new tires.

I'd avoid spacers if you can. My rims have a ton of back spaceing (similar to adding spacers)and I had to hammer the shit out of my wheelwell to make them fit with out rubbing. Which i found out I need to do more because they still rub on a hard hit.

Looks good. You definitely don't need to worry about the spindles there.

If you put spacers, you may get into the pinch weld/fender area more - because you'd essentially be decreasing backspacing. This diagram from the post above.

so maybe the 1.25”spacers would be to much? Might need to go with a slimmer space.

I had this setup a while back. Youll rub like a mf in a lot of places. I wouldn't recommend mounting that size of tire on the stock rims
