    you can have your truck painted and put in a touch screen radio, for way cheaper.

    Once you switch, you will highly regret it. Just dont do it

    @tomwilson74 Where does it end though? Next gen Tacoma is rumored to be around the corner once the new Tundra is released next year which is sharing the same body frame platform as the next Tacoma, per reports. 4th Gen Tacoma 2022 or 2023 give or take. I tell you from first hand experience, the 3rd gens drive different than the 2nd gens. Beautiful trucks, but drive a lot different in reference to low end torque, accelaration, etc. I had the itch for the 2020. Had to test drive it twice to convince myself I didnt need it. LoL! Needs and wants. Get it but know you will most likely want to re-gear with bigger tires and a lift and some weight.

    Boy oh Boy! I get into this same mindset sometime. we see so many new 3rd Gens posted and driving around and then the universe of course helps that and puts all 3rd Gens in our line of site. I feel like I don't even see any more older Tacoma's on the road some days, as iff everyone upgraded to the New New. However like most have commented already, my 2011 "speedway blue", which they don't make anymore and my personal favorite color, is paid for 100% and runs great. I can put a new suspension on it deck out the stereo and add more lights and a hot fresh new paint job on it and it would still cost me less than a new 3rd Gen would and it would still be stock and cost me again to upgrade all the aftermarket parts to my liking .... your truck your choice... end of the day whats a new truck going to bring to you that this one doesn't. speaking out loud to myself really.

    @THEPYRITETACO Most people I know with 3rd gen trd off road 4x4 have leased them. Toyota has crazy lease deals that they make you feel almost stupid if you finance. I make enough money for a TRD Pro or even a TRD Pro Tundra. I chose to use my fun money for mods and stuff. Gary Vaynerchuk, the famous entrepreneur says all the time, stop spending money to impress people you dont even like. Referring to the whole keeping up with the Jone's mindset.

    Well put.

    At the end of the day, OP is gonna find proponents and opponents for both generations. If he posted the same question in the 3rd gen (hell, post in the 1st gen too, haha) thread, he’d get answers why their trucks are the best. There’s a reason we see a zillion Toyotas on the roads. They are all great vehicles. TacomaWorld will always be here to help with any truck you get.

    OP, if you do upgrade to a 3rd gen, get a long bed. Real men drive trail limos. ;)

    OP: Sell my 2nd gen?

    Me: No.

    For the reasons stated above, stick w the 2nd gen. Keep it until the 4 gens come out and then re-evaluate. If they’re subpar to the 2nd gen, stick w 2nd gens for life. (This is my DD plan.)

    I almost sold mine during the spring, and backed out of it when I had a buyer. I know I would have regretted getting rid of it. Having no payment is better than having a new truck for me.

    14k would be a steal in my area. I’d say you can get a solid 18k out of it, if not more.

    @tomwilson74

    Nice 2012! You'd easily get $14K for it around here. It'd take about 2 hours

    I've had all the Toyota pickups and each has more pros than cons. I'm currently driving an '18 and can't say enough good things about it. The 3rd gen has two overdrives (5th & 6th gears), it also has the "S" mode which gives you control to limit the top gear your tranny can shift into (default is 4th gear). However, re-gearing to 4.88 or 5.29's have become more popular. The blind spot, back up camera, power rear window, and other safety features are nice.

    I would keep the '12 and buy the 2020, my house looks like a Toyota parking lot!:laughing: I wouldn't sell my '02 for anything or the others.

    Good luck with whatever you decide.

    Keep what you have,do you really want payments again,and basically you gain nothing with a 2020 Tacoma.You can easily go another 150k miles with your current truck.

    @Bulldogs129 Yourself as an owner of not just a 3rd gen, why do you think so many 3rd gen owners complain about the "lack of power" or skittish transmission and shifting? Maybe thats what comes with the Cons but the Pros far outweight that?

    The stock 3rd gen transmission shifts like an Eco tranny, and it feels like there's a lack of power. Toyota has a TSB that improves the shifting. A few 3rd gen owners keep the "ECT" on (there's a mod to turn on ect every time the truck starts).

    Unfortunately Toyota is held hostage to the fuel economy regulations and thus the changes in the 2016-2020 transmissions/rear ends/and such.

    Now all this to say, the engine is very powerful and will smoke the tires. It's odd to me how Toyota paired the 3.5liter engine that performs best at high rpms with an eco-friendly - gas saving - double overdrive tranny & higher geared 3.90 rear-end. The 3.90 was Toyota's biggest mistake, they should've put a 4.30 in the auto. The 4.88 or 5.29s would be a good fit for 33's + or folks that tow campers, boats, trailers and such.

    There's a good video Tacoma Beast put together about gearing-
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DA2M3G7pqs

    It took me a few months to really start enjoying the '18, after the TSB and learning what the "S" mode is for... I can cruise in it now. It tows pallets of st. augustine sod, mulch from Lowe's, cords of firewood, different rental equipment, Honda Rancher, and what not.

    There always seems to be a few things that change with each generation, 1st gen had weak LBJ, low payload weight, clock are pos, ss header y pipes crack, front brakes are too small, and on & on lol, the 2nd gen had head gasket, motor mounts, and so on; now we are sorting thru the 3rd gen tranny shift points, some issues on the 2016 were corrected, and all.

    @TacomaOC714

    I hope this helped a little. I enjoy these trucks man! I get attached and can't sell haha. I'm planning to buy my son a 2nd gen next spring (2012-2015 model).

    @Bulldogs129 Solid information! My wife asked me for a van or suv since she just turned in her lease on a Honda CRV and we have 2 boys under 2.5 years old. I kind of hinted at her keeping my 2015 with barely 54k miles and me getting a 2019 or 2020. I have a hard time letting go of things as well

    I know what you mean! I paid $1,400 for my '87 4wd extra cab (the guy I bought it from traded a mule for it- true story!), every gas station people walked over wanting to buy it lol. Now my '02, some people look at it like they're going steal it. If I'm at one of the large truck stops getting gas, I'll pump then drive up to the front. I've never had people want a vehicle like that before, a truck driver offered $14k for it. I just said thanks and all.

    We ended up buying my wife a Honda Pilot then an Odyssey when the kids were smaller. We needed the room too!
