I just redid most my garage walls with 1/2 ply and painted them white. Now I can drill/hang anything and anywhere really quickly. And its bright in their too.

That sounds good. Certainly a hell of a lot beefier than drywall without all the joy that comes along with that option.

Did you remove drywall then place plywood and screw into studs? Or placed over drywall?

My garage wasn't finished so I insulated it and put up the plywood.

It used to have an 18" deep cabinet running the length on the north wall and shelves up above, all open. I ripped everything out, insulated, and put up plywood. So much nicer now!

Plywood > drywall in a garage/shop 99% of the time as far as ease/cost/adjustability etc with the only downside being a bit of the fire resistance as I can see.

I guess depending on code requirements etc some areas require drywall, especially between shared walls of living space.

If you were finishing off an open stud garage now would you either:
    A) insulate and put up plywood
    B) insulate and drywall (with or without mud/tape)
    C) insulate and plywood exterior walls and drywall + plywood shared walls?

My current garage is what it is and I'm not going to be making any changes for our stay but I'm thinking down the road when we get into our next/forever home that we're likely to build.

Insulate. Then hire dry wall people to drywall and mud it before anything gets moved in.

Most code requirements are happy with 5/8" drywall between the garage and living spaces.

Most of the contractors around here will just put 2 layers of 1/2" because its so cheap and you gain a little bit of sound deadening as well. In addition, 1/2" is much easier to handle.

But would you bother with plywood over the drywall? Say 2 x 1/2" dryall + 1/2" or 3/4" plywood it's getting pretty chunky. I guess I'd be looking at electrical box extensions etc at that point too eh.

For me- depends on the use. Garage is dry walled and putting up what I need to hasn’t been an issue. For the wood shop, dry wall wouldn’t work unless I went the full cabinet route instead of hanging tools, blades and other stuff on the walls.

The shared wall to my house is finished to code. I did the plywood to the two walls that aren't. And I skipped the wall where the garage doors are :D

As long as you pass the inspection, then yes I would install plywood. Having infinite places to attach shelves or cabinets makes it so worth it to me.

Obviously, I'm honest enough to know I wont be making the final decision. SWMBO would be giving me the green or red light.

Household 6 doesn’t bother me about the shop. She only brings her car around after the warning light gets annoying after the first month or so of it glaring at her.

Any recommendations on a precision screwdriver? I need it for a watch battery replacement. Not sure what size it is, but Phillips fasteners.

Considered large kits from China but don’t want to end up with shit bits and handles that don’t hold the bits well under torque (had a set from Harbor Freight that exhibited both faults). I live a mile from HF, so if I’m going to end up with a cheap shit set I’d just go there instead of order off of Amazon.

I liked this one from Klein, but again.. not sure what size fasteners I have and not sure if I can buy additional bits from Klein for this driver.

    https://www.amazon.com/Klein-Tools-...a-694779468149&psc=1&ref=&adgrpid=69721953555

I guess I could get another HF set and use that as a bearing for what sizes I need, then I have a direction to go to with a better set.

I know Wiha has a set of 7 in Phillips and slotted, and I’ve used them previously but were an older set of the same design. At $23 not outside my price range, but reviews are hit and miss so making me think so is the QC on those sets. Again, I can get gritty feeling handles at HF. I do think the bits are superior to HF, but hand feel may not be. Certainly seems to be a lot of variance.

Although it may not fit your needs, I bought this computer/cell phone tool set a year ago to fix my PC, and I've been impressed. The bits all seem surprisingly well machined. Includes weird bit like the tiny 3 blade Phillips found on some of the latest gadgets. The little pry tools and tweezers are decent too. It lives in my desk drawer now.

Wera has a very interesting handle design. I’ve only held one, never owned any.
