    2001 Tacoma 2wd, 2.4, 5 speed, 240K miles.
Mod's include-- ONE upper left ball joint replacement, many mufflers, lots of tires and oil changes. ALL ORIGINAL. Owned for 13 years now.........
I have two tacos, one is a 2001 with 230k/5 speed/2.4/3.58 rear/2wd for 14 years problem free. Recently acquired an identical taco but it's an 2002 model. Same motor, w59, same differentials, same truck just one year different.
Problem is the 2001/230k miles will run circles around the 2002/90k miles, there is a very, very noticeable lack of power with the 2002. And the 2002 engine has a sound to it that's like a blower or a fan, the 2001 (more powerful one) has never had the muffled blower sound. Hard to describe!
2001 pulls hills in fifth gear, 2002 is an embarrassing fourth gear in same place...if not third. Check engine light on in both trucks. 2002 is on for gas cap problem, 2001 o2 sensor had check engine light on for ten years! Yet the 2001 runs more powerful by far. Wife noticed independently of me also.
2002 fires off the line fine at low rpm, but as soon as start getting into the higher rpms....right when you think it's going to come alive....It just seems like it's unable to breathe. 2001 comes to life at higher rpm and you can pass/climb/go 105 in fourth gear quick (supposedly).
Fuel mileage same, both trucks maintained, fuel filters-air filters-obvious things etc. Plugs, etc

    Any ideas?

I'd start with the getting the systems running correctly and fixing the issues causing the check engine light. The ecu adjusts things differently in those conditions

Check the fan clutch. It may be engaged all the time.
