What do you think is the best way to study? I have an app that shows all the questions based on the categories, and I've been more or less memorizing correct answers. However I don't really feel like I'm learning anything other than how to pass the test. Any good book recommendations?

The ARRL book is the bones of the ham world. I'd also suggest the Technician book from Gordon West.

    2018-2022 Technician Class https://www.amazon.com/dp/0945053908/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_o0XUDb3JVE944

Honestly though, study to pass. Go through a 10 question sub-section on lunch. Memorize the answers. Don't even read the other options. The following day, do another 10 questions.

It's a 35 question test, you're allowed 9 wrong. So don't get frustrated if one section seems tough. At worst you'll only get 1 question from that section.

And lastly, you're not supposed to know any of this. So if it seems new and completely foreign, it's because it is. This is one of those things in life that it's best to pass the test, and you really start your learning by doing and being on the radio.

ditto on the CB, almost required, they also use Marine radios up there (further range than CB). if you get a Baofeng radio you can tune into FRS/GMRS frequencies and are able to transmit on them. GMRS/FRS channels overlap....
    Midland-Frequency-Channel-Chart.jpg

the wattage limiting is already programmed into the radios for those frequencies... so they will function same as any GMRS/FRS radio.. just a better antennae will improve that radio a LOT.

if you stick to FRS bands you wont have any problems.. but definitly get a decent CB radio..

yup, get on it. its a fun time. and not much needed.. a stock truck can make it easy up there, just need time, and a full size spare tire, and repair kit & compressor.. maybe a pack of Zip[ Ties should something fall apart on you... and duct tape.. always have duct tape (I prefer gorrilla tape myself)... air down for a comfortable ride, and cruise the dirt roads at 45 or so where its not limited to 25 (work camps)...

Just ordered a BaoFeng BF F8HP radio.. And I'll make sure to flash to 87 before the trip and bring some fuel! Not really wanting to risk it lol. I'll have my CB and this baofeng radio.. Maybe I can relay between the two comms

if you like on our next outing i'll bring my laptop and programming cable so you can program in the GMRS/FRS frequencies as channels using CHIRP. theres a bunch of settings, and channel/frequency naming you can do through CHIRP that you cant do on the handset itself.

also worthwhile to grab your local EMS/FIRE/PD frequencies, as well as local repeater tower frequencies to have for listening in your local area.. found some interesting stuff on mine especially when stuck in traffic I can just tune in... range on handhelds is kinda weak, but as a mobile listen post it works great.

I've heard that they're banning the sale of them.. I just ordered one, and if you're interested in one, I'd get one before they stop sale..
