I have a dead 2.7 out on the road. Had to push it home! How embarrassing. I will check fuel pressure tomorrow but I’m pretty bummed out. This is after weeks of chasing bugs and top end issues, frame rescue etc. Now this!! Apparently the fuel pump is in the tank? Have to drop the tank. Ugh all rusty straps and bolts... I know how this is gonna go. I have access to a nice 5vz tank but without eyeballing the side by side can anyone please tell me if they are interchangeable between 2.7 and 3.6 l engines?

yes, you can swap them no problem.

The only difference is between trucks that are 2x4 and 4x4. Both tanks are the same shape and dimensions, but 4x4 tanks are a little bit deeper, meaning that a 2x4 tank strap will not fit on 4x4 (you'll have to lenghten it) and a 4x4 won't fit on a 2x4 (you'll have to shorten it)

But if it is the fuel pump you are after, both 2x4 and 4x4 use the same pump. But the pump's housing/bracket lenght will be different due to the different depth of the tanks (shorter on 2x4, longer on 4x4)

    See the difference for yourself:

Thank you very much onakat. I really appreciate that, now I gotta go and see if I can save the other tank from the crusher! I’m not positive but I think there is no in line fuel filter (1999) to test first , gotta go straight to the tank , and no service door in the rear bed! That’s a poor design yes?

Toyota did make two size tanks in the 4x4, a 16 gallon and the more common 18 gallon size.
I don’t know if they are interchangeable, just did my fuel pump, was actually easier to remove the bed and the six bolts that hold it for me anyway, the high-pressure fuel hose going to the fuel sender didn’t want to come loose for me but finally got one side loose.
With the bed off it was easy to bear down on the high-pressure hose.
There is an inline filter and a sock filter in the tank.

Why are you replacing the complete tank and not just the fuel pump?

Super helpful info here - Looking around for a replacement fuel tank in the LA area and was about to pick up a tank from a 4x2 which would have been small for my 4x4. Thanks!
