2012 dbl cab trd sport. Auto trans.98,000 miles I’m feeling occasional slip while in overdrive. I just had the trans and transfer case fluid changed. I towed a 6x12 box trailer up to NH empty (using OD) came back loaded with golf cart Drove in 4th gear home. Noticed slipping a day later w/o trailer on it. Mechanic said OD clutches are gone. Can I still drive in 4th w/o damaging anything else until I fix or sell?
Anyone have an idea what is wrong? New tranny is $4500 at Trans shop.

After the change, I brought it back , they checked it Again and found it down 1/2 a quart. They also found a number of Code’s when the plugged into computer. Mechanic said it may not be mechanical issue. How would trouble happen only in OD if it was a code issue? Think it’s time to bring it to dealer?

None of the those would affect the transmission, just some evap codes and a bad brake switch. U could check the connector to at the transmission for corrosion on the pins for corrosion, check the connector and inside and the opposite side with a mirror to make sure.

Looks like a simple plug/ unplug connection, could I reach up and unplug and coat with dielectric grease?

yea it just has a white flip latch to unplug it, u can just make sure there is no corrosion first and inspect the pins very carefully because i have seen them brake off into the connector they get so corroded.

Does it sound mechanical to you? This slip has only happened in OD at slower speeds 35-40 mph. I put down to fourth and it goes away.

Well you don't have an codes related to the transmission or the guy who scanned them did not scan the transmission computer. But the over drive system is pretty simple. when engine and transmission speeds are similar it will activate a solenoid to allow transmission fluid to apply a clutch inside the torque converter to make contact and sync the engine and transmission speed as 1:1

So you could have an issue at that connector with corrosion which is causing an electrical issue with the solenoid. If its all clean and no corrosion is present, They its possible you have a sticking solenoid or a fluid level issue were there is not enough fluid getting to the torque converter clutch. I havent ever seen one of these clutch wear out on a tacoma so your issue is more likely an electrical issue, fluid level or a sticking valve.

Well that is a lot better than a new tranny, I think at this point I’ll bring it to the dealer with all this information and have them check it. Thank you very much for your insight on this issue it is very much appreciated.

Truck is back from Dealer, no codes or electrical issues. The OD slip happen once after test ride with tech. He says mechanical issue but they have no idea what’s wrong. I have to wait until problem gets worse.
Very frustrating as I never had this problem before I had my trans fluid changed.

Any idea if this repair would show up in car fax. I didn’t get charged cause they didn’t fix anything. They waved the diagnostic fee.

I didnt realize this all started after they changed the fluid. What kind of shop did you bring it to? was it a drain and fill or did they use a transmission flush machine?

I believe it was drain and fill. They used Toyota ATF
