How is the airflow without the windows?

I’ve been going back and forth between windoors / nothing

Great. I open up the top half of the zip windows when I want air.

Just get the doors. Or at least one. You will be happy you did.

When my drifter was built it had no doors. After adding one, i realized how much better it is to have it. Makes accessing the back so easy. I use it all the time!

Agreed. I wouldn't do it for airflow. If I had a long bed, I would hate not having side access. Currently with stock bumper (no swingout), I just jump in the back to get anything I need or keep it in the back seat of the double cab.

I don’t have a drifter, but with a swingout, even having windoors on my shell is a life saver. I couldn’t imagine not having side access. You’d have to open the swingout every time just to grab something quick.

I don't yet have a Drifter - but I've spent weeks at a time living out of my current FWC setup with my dog. I'm planning on the same with the Drifter, and I highly doubt the experience will be significantly different in regards to the dog situation. If that point of view makes sense to you, here are my thoughts on your questions:

    1) If I'm running into the grocery or some place for a short time, I park the truck so the sun isn't coming into the cab, significantly crack the windows, and leave the dog up front. The camper cabover shades much of the roof, and I have a custom Nightfall Overland insulated windshield cover for high-angle sunny days. I've never had a problem with heat issues for a short time using this method. If I need to leave the dog for a longer period of time (a 4 or 6-hour mountain bike ride, for example), I pop up the camper, open the vent and the windows, turn on the fan and leave the dog in there with his bed and water. The camper stays cooler than being outside in the sun this way. He's stayed inside the camper for multiple hours on 90-degree days without becoming heat stressed.

    2) Most of this I've answered above... but if it's really cold outside, I like to leave him in the cab. The cab is small enough that he can stay pretty warm with his own body heat, especially on a sunny day if I don't put up the windshield cover.

    3) I don't let my dog in the bed, but he hangs out on the FWC stock couch and it shows no sign of wear. I have seen/felt the stock Drifter mattress cover material and I'd have no wear qualms with my dog. If your dog has really sharp nails or something I suppose it could be an issue.

YMMV. Hope that helps. Looking forward to many years of traveling with my dog in the Drifter!

Husband is 6'3". We have an Alucab awning on our Drifter and it seems fine. He said he might need to tip his head to make sure he clears it, but isn't really cognizant of doing it. Once under it, it's plenty tall. We do have an unintentional lift , probably a few inches that occurred when we upgraded the suspension. It wasn't something intentional but probably does help with give his height. Hope this helps.

My thoughts to prior questions re: dogs

    1) A short leave in the car is the same as other cars - only if it's cool do I do this.

    2) We quickly learned that if its cool/cold, they are better off in the cab. The cab is more insulated and our dogs have thin coats (Boxer, Boston Terrier). We also got them each a Horizon Hound down blanket, which they both adore. We are often in the mountains so it's cooler than our house. The pass through window is nice so we can hear each other. They often are in the back with us on the floor for afternoon naps.

    3) They do not sleep with the 2 of us upstairs. I also think the mattress cover material would be fine with dog paws for most dogs, provided they don't tend to tear up other fabric with their nails.

Our pups now LOVE the Drifter. They know what to expect, love being off leash and running around and settle in very well. We actually got rid of our old 1985 Vanagon largely because our Boston couldn't take the heat (it had no A/C). On the rare times it's gotten too hot, we just throw him in the cab and turn on the A/C and problem is solved. He has a very narrow temperature range, unlike our Boxer who doesn't pretty well no matter the temperature.[/QUOTE]

What's everyone's favorite tailgate sealing system so far? Gotta get my truck prepped in the next week or two.

A single bulb seal in one piece making a U shape attached to the bed (not the tailgate).
