Hey everyone, I am not super familiar with the inner workings of my Tacoma beyond oil changes and other regular maintenance. My check engine light came on this morning and the code was P0456 EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK DETECTED (VERY SMALL LEAK) CONFIRMED. It threw that code 4 times this morning and had one historical code for it. Where do I begin guys? I tightened down the gas cap (which I kknow sounds silly but I heard it could throw that code) and am not sure what I should check next.

Check the vacuum lines behind the intake manifold.

Besides obvious holes should I just be tightening connections?

No, check for cracked ends of vacuum lines and or broken. Wont hurt to clean the pcv as well.

Edit. Also how does the gas cap o ring look? Is it dry and cracked? If so replace

Usually just the gas cap, if its not locking or if the oring is worn.

Yeah was going to suggest checking the gas cap o ring/seal. Sometimes dirt/debris can get in there, spray it out with some brake cleaner and see if it does the trick. Otherwise might need to buy a new one if the seal is damaged. They are cheap.

Well I checked the area and didn't see anything. Will it clear itself or do I need to get a reader to clear it?

You'll need to clear it. Auto Stores do it for free or you can buy a cheap bluetooth OBDII reader on Amazon

Also the gas cap looks to be in pretty good shape. I will run to the autozone or napa store tomorrow. O'reilly said they wouldn't clear it for me due to a policy.
