    hey TW!
I’m currently running 285/75/16’s with about a 4” lift which is fine for me, but my fiancé and her daughter have a hard time climbing into my truck.
I want to lower the truck to around a 1.5” lift to make it easier to get in and out of, but I don’t want to sacrifice my beefy 33’s.
    What to do...?

How do I fit my 285’s under the truck with the shortest lift possible without tire rub?
I’m already using spidertrax 1.25” and have done the pinch weld mod.

Thanks in advance for any useful information!

What kind of lift are you currently running? Coilovers, spacers, drop bracket?
You should be able to fit your tires with no lift at all.

You should be able to pull the coilovers completely off the truck and drive it on the bumpstops without rubbing, or at least not very much. If that’s not the case, you might consider clearancing the spots that interfere to make sure you can use the full travel of your suspension. A side bonus would be that you can run whatever amount of lift you want.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

    285 75 R16? With no lift?

    No

OP... you can probably make it work with 2-2.5 inch lift but your wheel spacers will probably be a problem. (this depends on what your wheel backspce is though)

I'm running around 2.5 inch lift with 285 70 R17 and all I rub is the washer reservoir connector on the passenger tire side... if I lost my 1.25 spidertrax I probably wouldn't rub.

But I have a tube bumper that allows me to adjust my lower control arms forward (without hitting stock lower bumper valance) and adjustable upper control arms.

You should be able to just adjust the front King coilovers to have less preload and replace the AAL with a single or 3 leaf AAL. Depending on how low you want to go you may need to trim some plastic and possibly do a CMC. I'll be running 305s with only a 1.75" front lift.

EDIT: just realized I'm in the 1st Gen forum:facepalm:

I’ve still got a stock bumper..
I’m not sure about backspacing. I’m using my original 5 spoke stock wheels powder coated black30C96815-660F-409D-BD37-5A72BD90A7A2.jpg

I dislike the look of step boards, and rock sliders aren’t in my budget right now. I’m saving all my money for a wedding and hopefully honeymoon off-road adventures.

Yeah it's a thing you have to do to run large tires without running a lot of lift on 2nd and 3rd gen tacos. It's an abbreviation for "Cab Mount Chop," didn't realize we were talking about a 1st gen though haha

Like someone said. If you don’t have sliders already, get some. Don’t get running boards or running boards with drop down steps. My sliders have been so useful on the streets and trails.

I’m running at least 2” (I’m hopping) and have 285/75/16. With some SPC UCA and a good alignment I’m able to drive on the streets no problem. This is considering you do the pinch weld mod as well.

If you’re still worried you can do this...

    Cutting, beating, hammering, "massaging", etc.

Think of it this way - when your suspension is fully stuffed and you're on the bumpstops, can your wheels still turn? Can you steer lock to lock? If not, what happens when you're wheeling and you get all crossed up in the rocks? This is no different than what I was describing - not that you'd want to drive around like that, just that you should be able to.

I can sit on the bumps with 35's with no rubbing pointing straight ahead, and only minor rubbing when steering side to side.

Ya... but the entire point of his original post was what can he do to lower his truck with the 33s without the rub.

You cant fit 33s with no lift and no rub.... not unless you cut A LOT out.

And I would contend that you should ONLY fit 33's if you can do it with no lift and no rub.

I assume you have 33" tires? Have you had to cut a lot out to get them to fit when fully stuffed?

I had to get rid of the stock front bumper (valance), Beat the shit out of the pinch weld, and adjust the LCAs all the way forward... and still rub at full stuff... with 2.5~2.75 lift.

I only really rub the washer reservoir now though.

Fitting 255/85R16 (which are 33s) on my first gen required the pinch weld mod and some trimming of the fender flares. Like has been said, a lift isn't required. The tire still has to fit in the wheel well when you're at full compression. Adding a lift doesn't change the location of the tire when you're on the bumpstops. For that size tire, wheel backspacing and alignment have more to do with it than anything else. The alignment has to be done to get the wheel far forward enough so it doesn't run the rearof the wheel well on compression. This can compromise The caster and camber though, so it's a balancing act.
