ok i'm not sure why this hasn't come up yet but someone on here just told me the rear end in the 5 lugs are all 7.5"... In the post above your talking like we have an 8.4"... Why is there soo much contradicting info on the rear ends to the 5 lugs??

from what i have read we are the 8.4. there are a few members on here that have swapped an 8.4 from other trucks and had success.

great thanks guys, all the contradictions make sense now as their was a year separation. so did the newer 8.4's come spring under just as my 7.5 did? I'll look for one of them if so, that'll make re-gearing much easier.

So i need a third member from a prerunner tacoma (non TRD or e-locked) and it'll bolt up to my 5 lug's rear end?

Yes search for 3rd member from 4cylinder 4x4 or prerunner with 4.10 gears, the highest gears to come in any Tacoma stock.

I know this is an old thread, no one had a successful swap story to share on 2x4 2.7l 2nd gen 5lug?

    A thing or two...
You can't just swap axles between 5-lug and 6-lug. 5-lug are spring under and 6-lug are spring over. It can be done, but you would need to cut off the spring and shock mounts and reweld them. If you just want to swap the 3rd member, you need to use the 3rd member out of a non e-locker axle. The e-locker axle has a different flange and the 3rd members don't swap.

Thank you for the great info,
I am planning to get a 3'rd member of a non e-locker. I am corresponding with a guy selling his 2005 Tunrda 3.91 with LSD. Would that bolt on straight to my 10 bolt axle and has the same pattern as the drive shaft flange?

As far as I know the 3rd member flange will be the same. I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say 10-bolt. The non e-locker axle is referred to as the 8.4, and the e-locker axle is referred to as the 8" e-locker.

You'll have to have to get driveshaft flange measurements to know if they're the same. I would guess that they'll be the same, but I have no actual info.

Given that the Tundra received the 4.0 engine in 2005, i'd say the odds are that if it's a non TRD Tundra, it'll fit.

    I have an 07 2X4 2.7l 5 spds 5-lugs with 3.31 ratio and 235/75R15s.
I have done a 3'rd member swap from an 09 4x4 V6 with LSD and 3.73. It was straight forward, new member bolted on directly, no machining or anything crazy like that.
The truck is running much better than before, day and night but nothing crazy. MPG is almost the same. Now the speedo started reading 7.5 MPH more than the GPS. I had to replace Existing speed sensor (27 teeth) to one with 29 teeth (part number 3340339515).
While I am at it I also did change the axle seals and put new Diff oil and added LSD additive.

I'm in the process of looking for used parts for my 07' 2wd 5 lug 4cyl. door jam code says A01A which is supposedly a 3.42. very sluggy on highway even with stock 215/70/15 tires.
Suspension needs replaced (all of it), as well as my tires so I'm looking at upgrades. I've already acquired 16x8 +30 wheels. I think I'm going minimum lift with no larger than 30's. Was actually thinking a little bit of a power bump with 3.73s and 29's. 29" = 235/70 or 29.6" = 245/70. wont be going offroad much at all.

Ideally I need to collect the parts for a 3.73 LSD rear end. or open 3.73 and get a manual locker setup.
